The Lead: The Emerson men's lacrosse team saw their two game winning streak be snapped at the hands of a 23-7 setback against the visiting Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons on Saturday afternoon to open up NEWMAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A goal from Scott Whear opened up the first quarter as Emerson responded with a net from sophomore Jared Brush (Grosse Pointe Park, Mi.) to knot the score, 1-all.
- Wheaton countered for five consecutive goals and entered the second quarter with a five-goal edge at 6-1.
- CJ Leighton, Josh Talanian and Whear put a trio of goals past Emerson sophomore goalie Bailey Kennedy (Swampscott, Mass.) to extend its lead to 9-1.
- Emerson added its second goal on a net from sophomore Cameron Radenberg (Los Angeles, Calif.) to put the score at 9-2 before nets from Leighton, Whear and Zach Brode pulled Wheaton ahead by 10 at 12-2 to close out the first half.
- Radenberg's second goal of the game put Emerson back within single digits at 12-3 until Wheaton responded with two more goals from Talanian and Leighton to push the Lyons lead to 14-3.
- A goal at 9:09 of the third quarter by Radenberg closed Emerson to 10 at 14-4.
- Wheaton tacked on another pair of goals from Whear and Alex Stromberg through the 6:27 and 3:11 marks with its lead extended to 16-4.
- Brush closed out the third stanza with Emerson's fifth goal with 27 ticks on the clock.
- The Lyons outscored the Lions 7-2 within the fourth quarter and ballooned their lead to 23-5 that consisted of Talanian's fifth and sixth nets.
- With 3:38 left in regulation, Radenberg dished his fourth goal of the game to bring the score to 23-6 before senior Austin Max (Nashville, Tenn.) poured in Emerson's seventh and final goal at 1:02.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Radenberg paced Emerson with four goals and four different Lions tallied one assist each.
- Freshman Paul Seguin (Norwell, Mass.) scooped up a team-best six ground balls for Emerson.
- Kennedy was between the pipes through the first 30 minutes and made eight saves while he allowed 12 goals on 20 shot attempts, while Maue wrapped the final 30 with eight saves and allowed 11 goals.
- Talanian found the back of the net a game-high six times for Wheaton and Matt Morgan recorded five assists.
- Mike Doucette scooped eight ground balls and James Marcucella caused four turnovers.
- Wheaton held the 69-18 shot advantage over Emerson, as well as in ground balls (45-31) and in the X (23-10) and finished 13-for-14 in clears and 1-for-4 in man-up chances.
- Emerson went 1-for-7 on man-up opportunities and 10-for-17 in clears.
