BOSTON, Mass. After an 11-10 overtime loss to the Becker College Hawks (2-6), Emerson Men's Lacrosse (0-5) team remains winless on the 2015-16 season.
With both teams having winning percentages under .500, this close match was a statement game. Just 60 seconds in, Hawks attackman Daniel Johnson scored to give Becker a 1-0 lead. But just over a minute later, Lions midfielder Jack Bushell scored on an unassisted goal, tying the game at 1-1. The Hawks scored four consecutive goals until Lions attackman Austin Max tallied a goal with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter making it a 5-2 game.
The Lions rallied back to make it a one goal game at the beginning of the second quarter with goals from midfielder Conor Judge and attackman Nick Kitsos, which made it 5-4. Becker closed out the second quarter with goals from Matthew Genkos and Ryan Kearney, making the score 7-4 Hawks at halftime. Shot attempts after 30 minutes of play were in Becker's favor 24-10.
Only two goals were scored in the third quarter with the Hawks and the Lions splitting the tallies. Scoring for Becker was Genkos, while Diego Rosende scored his first for the Lions, making it 8-5 with 15 minutes left in regulation.
In the first five minutes of the fourth quarter the two teams traded goals until Hawks attackman Daniel Johnson took a one minute slashing penalty leading to a man-up goal by Emerson's Austin Max, which was followed 35 seconds later by Jack Bushell to make it a one goal game once again, 9-8. Hawks midfielder Kearney gave Becker a 10-8 lead with under five minutes to go. Then, with just over three minutes to go, Nick Kitsos kept the Lions in the game cutting Becker's lead to one.
With 11 seconds to go, Emerson attackman Rosende scored his third of the game on a fast break to send the Lions into overtime tied at 10-10.
The Lions won the overtime faceoff, but aggressive play from the Hawks Bryan Parsons forced a turnover. With an unsettled opportunity, Kearney connected with Johnson to win the game for Becker only 15 seconds into overtime, 11-10.
Stat leaders for Becker include Johnson who lead the team in goals with five and was tied in shots on goal with Blake Boutiette and Kearney each having six. Kearney also lead the team in shot attempts with ten, and assists with two. Parsons lead the team in ground balls with nine. Goaltender Jordan Mudd recorded nine saves on 19 shots in the winning effort.
Stat leaders for Emerson include Rosende who lead the team in goals with three as well as shot attempts with nine, recording a team-high seven shots on goal. Midfielder Fernando Gutierrez lead the Lions in ground balls with a game-high 13, and went 21-25 on faceoffs. Goaltender Bailey Kennedy stopped 15-26 shots from Becker in the OT loss.
The Lions return to action Saturday when they play Albertus Magnus in East Hartford, Conn. at 1:00pm. Becker will play at Curry College on Friday at 3:30pm.
