The Lead: Sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) powered out an overall game-high 21 points and nine boards to push the Emerson women's basketball team to a 63-57 triumph over host Connecticut College on Tuesday night in non-conference play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Boyle finished 10-for-13 with 21 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Emerson, while junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) chipped in 13 points and five assists. Junior Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) had nine points and seven boards and sophomore Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) added seven points and six assists off the bench.
- Liz Malman went 7-for-18 with 19 points and had three steals for host Connecticut College, while Payton Ouimette went 6-for-12 with 14 points, six rebounds and three helpers. Mairead Hynes had a game-high 11 rebounds and Nancy Coulverson tallied six points off the bench. Sami Ashton also recorded a team-high four assists for the Camels.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- At the end of the first quarter, Emerson and Connecticut College were tied 8-all.
- The Camels closed out the second quarter with back-to-back field goals from Malman to propel the hosts to a 20-17 edge at the conclusion of the first half.
- Emerson's offense gained control in the third quarter and outscored Connecticut College 33-19 to extend their lead to 50-39. Freshman Kate Foultz (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) poured a three-point buzzer beating bucket from the top of the key to give the Lions a comfortable 11-point cushion.
- With 8:43 remaining in regulation, Boyle canned a jumper to put the score at 52-40 before the hosts battled back to within 52-45 after Hynes set up Malman on a back-door cut to the basket with 7:14 left.
- Malman tacked on four more points within the last minute to put the Camels within five, but the Lions were able to seal the 63-57 win.
