BOSTON, Mass. (December 8, 2025) – Emerson College junior forward Claire English has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week, presented by SKYBOKX 109, for women's basketball for the second time this season the Conference office announced this morning.

English, also named NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week on November 24, earns the weekly recognition for the second time in her career and it marks the third time an Emerson student-athlete has collected the recognition this season with junior Kaylin O'Meara receiving the award following the opening week of the season on November 10.
English averaged 3.0 blocked shots and 2.0 steals while collecting 7.5 rebounds per game, including 6.5 per game on the defensive end, in a 1-1 week for Emerson. She also contributed 7.0 points on 7-of-11 shooting (63.6%) from the floor for the week. English pulled down ten rebounds to go with eight points, four blocked shots and two steals at Emmanuel College on Thursday and then added two blocks and two steals with five rebounds and six points, making all three of her shots from the floor, in Saturday's 85-75 win over Framingham State University.
English has started all nine games for Emerson this season and is ranked second among NEWMAC leaders with her team-high 2.0 blocked shots per game, while ranking 11th with 7.8 rebounds and sixth with 2.8 offensive boards per game. She ranks fourth on the team with her 8.6 points per game on a team-best 62.1-percent shooting, while adding 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals in 21.7 minutes per contest. English has recorded two double-doubles for the Lions, scoring in double-figures in three games this season overall while pulling down double-digit rebounds in three contests.
English, named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team last winter, has started 35 of her 53 career games played at Emerson and totaled 314 points as a 56.2-percent career shooter, 323 rebounds, 65 blocked shots, 44 assists and 38 steals. She has scored in double-figures 13 times over her career, with double-digit rebounds in 16 contests and nine double-doubles.
Emerson (6-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) closes out its first semester schedule with a pair of midweek games this week, starting tomorrow night when it crosses The Commons to visit Suffolk University at 7 p.m. The Lions return to Boylston Street two days later to host Salem State University at Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gymnasium on Thursday at 7 p.m.
