Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men's lacrosse team outscored Emerson College, 10-3, in the first half en route to a 19-8 NEWMAC victory on Wednesday night. Senior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) compiled four goals and four assists for the Engineers (10-3, 3-1 NEWMAC) who reached the 10-win mark for the first time since 1995. Freshman Diego Rosende (Plantation, Fla.) paced the Lions (5-8, 0-4 NEWMAC) with three goals and an assist.
MIT rattled off six unanswered goals in the first quarter with Cook scoring twice and earning an assist. Sophomore Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) was a factor in the Engineers' last two goals as he set up junior Jonah Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) midway through the frame and then registered an unassisted marker four minutes later.
Emerson ended the shutout after 41 seconds elapsed in the second stanza when sophomore Calvin Bussiere (Colchester, Conn.) redirected a feed from freshman Andrew Romano (Sarasota, Fla.). The Cardinal and Gray responded with four straight goals, increasing its lead to 10-1 with 3:20 on the clock. The Lions countered by scoring twice before the intermission as Romano and Bussiere found the back of the net.
The visitors carried the momentum into the third quarter as junior Conor Judge (Smithfield, R.I.) connected on a pass from Bussiere, narrowing the gap to 10-4 at the 12:37 mark. MIT's advantage grew following strikes by senior John Kramer(Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) but Emerson sophomore George Ryan (Waterford, Conn.) buried an unassisted marker with 43 seconds left, moving the score to 12-5. This was as close as it would get as the Engineers generated a 7-3 run during the last 11:16 of the game. Rosende provided all of the scoring for the Lions while Cook registered two goals and three assists for the hosts.
Traub finished with four goals, two assists, and two caused turnovers while juniorLuke Verdi (Middletown, Md.) totaled two goals and two assists. Davis had a hat-trick as sophomore Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) recorded one goal, two assists, three groundballs, and a game-high three caused turnovers. SophomoreCody Jacobucci (Woodstown, N.J.) went 12-of-17 in face-offs and collected seven groundballs while freshman Nick Martin (Mason, Ohio) was 8-of-13 at the "X" and gathered six groundballs. Kramer added four groundballs as junior goalie Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) made four saves.
Bussiere posted two goals and an assist as Romano contributed one goal and an assist. Junior Nick Kitsos (Summit, N.J.) led the way with five groundballs while classmate Graham Finley (Needham, Mass.) notched three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Judge and freshman Jack Bushell (Kentfield, Calif.) both added three groundballs as sophomore goalie Jordan Maue (Andover, Mass.) amassed 15 saves and four groundballs.
Both squads continue NEWMAC play on the road on Saturday, April 18. MIT will visit the Massachusetts Maritime Academy while Emerson will travel to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
