Box Score
It was cold and snowy today for the Emerson Men's Lacrosse Home Opener against Albertus Magnus. The Lions are now 1-0 overall while the Falcons drop to 0-1.
The first quarter opened up with a long but scoreless possession by Emerson. The Lion's fired a volley of shots, but almost 5 minutes had passed before Emerson freshman Andrew Romano (3 total, 1 assist) hit cage to give the Lions the lead, assist by Calvin Bussiere. The first quarter ended 1-0 Emerson despite multiple attempts by both teams.
In the second quarter Albertus responded with a goal by Dalton Sargent to tie the game. Shortly after, the Lion's Nicholas Kitsos fired back to retake the lead. This started a bit of a run as the Lions went into the half 4-1.
After Halftime the Lions opened up with a goal from freshman and lead scorer Diego Rosende (4 total, 1 assist). But the Falcons were fighting to get back in it as Mike Choiniere capitalized on a man-up opportunity, followed by another goal by Sargent to bring to score 5-3. This is where the comeback stopped though, as the Lions went on a 4 goal run, one credited to freshman Marco Mazzarelli, assist by George Ryan (1 goal, 2 assists).
Both teams played aggressive defense forcing the offense to work for every goal. Starting close defenders Daniel Terry, Jackson Marchant, and Graham Finley pressed out forcing necessary turnovers to help drive offense. Honorable mention to starting goalie Jordan Maue who was credited with 14 saves and played a dynamic game.
Albertus did well in the faceoff department, winning 14 of 20 thanks to Greg Shawinsky. But frequently the Lions own faceoff men Conor Judge and Jack Bushell were able to get the ball back.
Men's Lacrosse faces Regis College next at home on March 7th at 1:00pm.
