Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – A second quarter filled with penalties hindered the Emerson Men's Lacrosse Team Tuesday night as the Lions fell 9-6 to the visiting Raiders of Rivier. With the loss the Lions are now 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in conference play as Rivier moves to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the GNAC.
The first quarter saw Emerson start off hot as Max Smith put away the first goal of the game a few minutes in before Tyler Hastings made some moves, setting up Benjamin Byrd for a goal before adding another of his own to make it 3-0. EC's Nicholas Kitsos finished off the quarter with another goal off an assist from Benajmin Byrd while Clayton Fisk made eight saves to keep RU scoreless.
The second quarter saw the Lions struggle though after Calyton Fisk accrued a penalty that opened the door for two goals for Rivier before it expired. Nine more penalties for the Lions followed in the quarter and the Raiders took full advantage, scoring eight goals in the quarter to make it 8-4 Rivier at the break.
The third period saw the Lions compose themselves more as it turned into a defensive effort for both teams. Both squads put up nearly equal amounts of shots, but EC's Clayton Fisk posted another shutout quarter while Max Smith added another to make it 8-5 Rivier.
Headed into the fourth quarter, both goalies saw a workout with Emerson putting up nine to Rivier's six shots in the half. The Raiders struck again in the 21st minute of action to make it 9-5. The Lions surged again in the next 50 seconds though with Benjamin Byrd adding his second goal of the day. The effort fell short though as the Raiders held the line the rest of the game to finish it 9-6.
The Lions return to action this Thursday as they travel to Becker to face the Hawks in a 7 p.m. match-up in Leicester, Mass.
