Rookie Benjamin Byrd Lifts Men's Lacrosse In Double Overtime Thriller

Box Score

WESTON, Mass. – A huge goal in double overtime from freshman Benjamin Byrd lifted the Emerson Men's Lacrosse Team to an intense 9-8 (2 OT) win over Regis Thursday night. With the win the Lions are now 1-1 on the year.

The Lions got put into a corner early on in the game as the Pride owned the first quarter, putting in three goals to hold a 3-0 lead after one. Regis was brutal on the attach with 19 shots in the period as Donald Welch did work with six saves to his name.

The second quarter saw the Lions offense start to settle in though as Nicholas Kitsos and Benjamin Byrd scored back-to-back unassisted goals to make it 3-2. Regis answered with another goal in the end of the half as the teams headed into the break with Regis up 4-2.

The second half started rough as well with the Pride putting away another goal to start edging away, but the hero on the day, Benjamin Byrd wouldn't let it go as he scored another off a pass from Nicholas Kitsos. The back-and-forth continued though as RC dropped another goal before Tyler Hastings entered into the fray with a goal at the end of the third to make it 6-4.

The fourth quarter was all Emerson though as they attacked the Pride with 11 shots in the period rifling off three unanswered goals to snake the 7-6 lead. It was short-lived though as RC came back with two of their own to make it 8-7. Benjamin Byrd in the last two minutes of action connected with Eric Colleran though to put away the game-tying goal as the teams headed in to overtime.

The first overtime yielded little as both teams seemed out of gas with Regis only putting up three shots to EC's one as both teams were unable to break the stalemate. It looked to be the same in the second overtime until Brady Darragh found Benjamin Byrd with a 1:40 left on the clock as he doused the game winner into the net.

The Lions will return to their home pitch this Saturday as they set to face Daniel Webster. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. in Boston at Rotch Field.
