Baseball Closes out 2022 Season with 2 Losses at MIT

The Lead: The Emerson Baseball team wrapped up their 2022 campaign on Saturday afternoon. Senior Calvin Jacey drove in 2 runs and classmate Joe Colucci added 3 hits for the afternoon but the Lions ultimately dropped both games to the Engineers of MIT.

 

GAME ONE: MIT 14; Emerson 3

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The scoring in game 1 began in the home half of the 2nd inning with 1 out. Back-to-back singled from Graham Cartwright and Erik Anderson set the table for Cory O'Shea to double in Cartwright and give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. Kennan Gumbs followed with an 2 RBI double of his own; giving MIT a 3-0 lead after 2 innings.
  • With 1 out in the top of the 3rd inning, the Lions were able to get 2 baserunners when Senior Josh Cohen bunted for a hit before his classmate Joe Colucci singled, but both runners were left on base.
  • The bottom of the 3rd inning saw the Engineers tack on 2 more runs. A Malachi single led to a 2-run homerun by Cartwright, giving MIT a 5-0 lead after 3 innings of play.
  • The Engineers offense exploded in the bottom of the 4th inning. Tallying 6 hits and plating 4 runners, extending their lead to 9-0 after 4 innings.
  • MIT scored for the 4th consecutive innings as they tacked on their 10th run in the bottom of the 5th inning.
  • The Lions did get on the board in the top of the 7th inning when a leadoff walk from Junior Matt Nachamie resulted in a run scored on a wild pitch.
  • Th top of the 8th inning saw the Lions score 2 more runs. With 2 outs in the inning, Senior Quinton Copeland scored on a wild pitch and 2 batters later, Senior Calvin Jacey drove in Freshman Briggs Loveland with a single to right field. Halfway through the 8th inning, the Lions trailed 10-3.
  • The home half of the 8th inning saw the Engineers offense score another 4 runs. This pushed the score to 14-3; resulting in an MIT victory via the 10 run-rule in 8 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lions had the first opportunity to score in game 2 of the doubleheader in the top of the 3rd inning. With 2 outs, Senior Joe Colucci singled up the middle and on the next play would advance to 3rd base. Freshman Briggs Loveland followed up with a walk but both runners were stranded at 1st and 3rd base to end the inning.
  • MIT answered in the home half of the 3rd inning. The Engineers were able to cash in on some scoring opportunities as they plated 3 runs on 3 hits and stranded 1 baserunner in the inning. After 3 complete innings, the Engineers led 3-0.
  • The Lions were able to get on the board in the top of the 4th inning. A leadoff walk by Senior Lou Davolio would later turn into a run when classmate Calvin Jacey played Davolio with a sacrifice fly. Halfway through4 innings, the Lions trailed 3-1.
  • MIT capitalized on a walk and a throwing error by Emerson in the bottom of the 5th inning; plating 1 run. The bottom of the 6th inning would be similar as the Engineers again capitalized on Emerson miscues and plated another run. After 5 innings, MIT led 5-1.
  • The 7th inning would be the see the Lions offense go down in order, followed by the Engineers offense explode for 5 runs on 3 hits. The Lions aided MIT with 3 free passes and 1 throwing error. After 7 innings, MIT extended their lead to 10-1.
  • MIT tacked on the game clinching run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th inning. The Engineers secured a 11-1 run-rule victory to sweep Saturday's doubleheader and the 3-game series.

UP NEXT

The Lions finish their season with an overall record of 10-23 and a conference record of 3-14. With 3 NEWMAC victories, this marks their highest win total since joining the NEWMAC. The Lions head into the offseason with hopes of improving in the 2023 season.
