HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With 2 outs in the top of the first inning, Emerson Senior Lou Davolio got the scoring started for the Lions. With Quinton Copeland and Briggs Loveland on base, Davolio singled through the right side, plating 2 runs for the Lions.
  • Wheaton responded in the home half of the 2nd inning as they manufactured a run and plated their first run of the game via a sacrifice fly to the left fielder. After 2 complete innings, Emerson led 2-1.
  • The 3rd, 4th, and 5th inning saw a combined 1 hit from both teams as Emerson Sohpome Ty Bourne kept the Wheaton offense tamed and Wheaton's Stephen Quigley stifled Emerson's potent offense.
  • In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Wheaton offense came to life. A leadoff walk would set the table for a Zach DeMattio line drive home run over the right center wall; giving Wheaton their first lead of the ballgame at 3-2. Later in the inning, an RBI double by Anthony Tebiero gave the Lyons a 4-2 lead after 6 innings.
  • Sophomore hurler Chris Lowe came in relief of Bourne and shut down the Wheaton offense. Throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball, while strikeout out 3 Lyons.
  • With 1 out in the top of the 8th inning, back-to-back singles from Junior Thai Morgan and classmate Matt Nachamie put runners at first and second when Lou Davolio stepped up to bat. Davolio proceeded to drive the go-ahead homerun over the right field fence; giving Emerson a 5-4 lead.
  • Unfortunately for Emerson, in the bottom of the 9th inning, a single and 2 hit-by-pitches would load the bases for Wheaton. With nobody out in the inning, Jake Studley singled through the left side, allowing 2 Wheaton runners to score and giving the Lyons the walk off victory.
