HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Senior Johnny Maffei set the tempo for the Lions as he struck out the side in the first inning.
  • After a leadoff walk, New England College's Shayne Audent would respond with striking out the side as well.
  • The Lions would strike first in the 3rd inning when Senior Quinton Copeland reached on an error by New England College's shortstop. Junior Matt Nachamie would capitalize when he would double down the left field line allowing Copeland to score from first base.
  • Nachamie would advance to third when Senior Lou Davolio singled to the outfield. Nachamiw would then score on a Chris Ferara sacrifice fly.
  • Davolio would also score giving the Lions a 3-0 lead at the end of 3 innings.
  • Maffei would continue cruising as the Pilgrims had no answer in the top of the 4th inning.
  • The bottom of the 4th opened with a Jake Okamoto double to the right-center gap, followed by a Thai Morgan single.
  • Nachamie would follow up with a 2 RBI single as he drove in both Okamoto and Morgan; giving the Lions a 5-0 lead.
  • Maffei would get 2 quick outs in the top of the 5th inning before running into some trouble. A hit-by-pitch, a walk, and a single would push a run across for New England College and chase Maffei from the game.
  • Senior Rory Tettemer would come in to relieve Maffei. After another hit-by-pitch that would load the bases, Tettemer would get JD Normand to fly out to shortstop and strand 3 Pilgrims on base; keeping the Lions 5-1 lead intact through 5 innings.
  • With the Lions up 5-1, the top of the 8th saw a walk, single, and a hit-by-pitch load the bases for the Pilgrims. Connor Morin would step to the plate and launch a ball over the right field fence; tying the game at 5-5.
  • The Lions were unable to answer in the bottom of the 8th and the Pilgrims, despite loading the bases, could not take the lead.
  • Emerson's Lou Davolio would be the first batter in the bottom of the 9th inning and he wasted no time launching a solo home run over the left field fence; giving the Lions a 6-5 walk off victory.

UP NEXT

  • The Lions head to Tucson, Arizona for the week of spring break as they will play 6 games between March 5 and March 10.
