The Lead: The Emerson baseball team were handed a pair of NEWMAC setbacks against the visiting Coast Guard Bears on Sunday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium. Emerson suffered a 12-3 loss to start the day off and dropped the second game by the score of 5-1.
Game One: Coast Guard 12, Emerson 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson found themselves in a three run deficit after Coast Guard's half of the first after Will Stephens plated the first run on a wild pitch followed by a pair of RBI singles from Zach Sema and Kyle Jackson.
- Within the Lions half of the first, they answered with a pair of runs to cut the score to 3-2.
- After junior Neil Perry (Middleboro, Mass.) singled to put Emerson on the board, junior Nolan Megna (Buffalo, N.Y.) drew a bases loaded walk to plate Perry for the second Lions run.
- Walks came back to bite Schwartz as Coast Guard tallied a three-run fourth to extend its lead to 6-2.
- Schwartz gave up a pair of bases loaded walks to Will Stephens and Sema to begin the inning, Luke Thompson plated the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
- Senior Mitch Moormann (Hollywood, Fl.) sent an RBI single into the outfield to bring in the third Emerson run and cut the lead in half at 6-3 within the home half of the sixth.
- Coast Guard bumped its lead to 9-3 with a three-run seventh frame that consisted of Timbo Duncan's RBI two-bagger into right and a mishap at second that allowed a pair of runs to cross.
- Over the course of the seventh through ninth frames, Coast Guard scratched six runs across to increase its advantage to 12-3.
- The Lions welcomed Bears reliever Alex Cordes into the seventh and loaded up the bases with no outs, but Cordes escaped the inning unharmed and retired the Lions in order.
- The Bears added its 10th run in the top of the eighth after Duncan batted fly ball that made its way into center.
- In its half of the eighth, Cordes surrendered a pair of walks and hit sophomore Max Wildstein (Atlanta, Ga.) to set up a two out bases loaded opportunity, but the Bears put the Lions away and struck out the final batter.
- Stephens kicked off the ninth with an RBI single to drive in Jon Pressley for the 11th Bears run with the bases full and helped set up Tosacano to score its final run after Sema drew the walk.
- Cordes made quick work of Emerson to wrap up the ninth with a pair of punch outs and a popup to the shortstop.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Moormann batted 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, one RBI, one run scored and drew one walk.
- Perry and Megna each drove in an RBI with one run scored and senior Clint Fontanella (Pelham, N.H.) finished 2-for-3.
- Through four innings on the mound, Schwartz allowed six runs (four earned) to cross on five hits and walked five.
- Sophomores Ethan Young (Amherst, Mass.), Jake Mitchell (Monroe, Oh.), Tim Mainella (Dover, N.H.) and Noah Zimmerman (Queens, N.Y.) completed the final five frames and allowed a combined six runs, eight hits and four walks.
- Stephens led the Bears in the batter's box and finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, double, two singles and two RBIs, while Serna went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.
- Webster was credited with the win after he allowed just three runs on six hits through the first six innings to match four walks and three strikeouts.
- Cordes earned his first save of the season within the final three frames and surrendered just a single hit while he walked five and fanned four.
Game Two: Coast Guard 5, Emerson 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Within the second to four innings, Coast Guard was able to get to Knox for four runs to give the Bears an early 4-0 lead.
- Pressley drove in the Bears first run on an RBI single in the second inning.
- Two more Coast Guard runs came in within the third as Duncan got whacked with a pitch to plate Cordes before Brendan McNeil brought in the third score after he grounded into a fielder's choice.
- Serna knocked in the fourth Coast Guard run on an RBI single before Knox kicked off a run of four scoreless innings.
- Harris was lights out on the mound and held Emerson scoreless through the opening five frames, but Emerson made their way onto the board behind senior Kyle Becker's (Jericho, N.Y.) RBI grounder to short to bring the score to 4-1.
- In Emerson's half of the seventh, the Lions notched a trio of singles to load up the bases only to have the inning conclude with a double play.
- Knox's scoreless streak was snapped in the top of the ninth after Serna scratched Coast Guard's fifth and final run across on a wild pitch.
- Moormann sparked some hope for Emerson as he began the bottom of the ninth with a double into the right field gap, but Harris downed the Lions in order on a pair of grounders and a strikeout.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fontanella and Moormann each finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
- Knox dropped to 2-1 in his complete game outing where he gave up five runs (three earned) on nine hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
- Cordes went 2-for-5 with two singles and two runs scored and Stephens went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
- Serna, Duncan, McNeil and Pressley all drove in runs for the Bears.
- Harris snagged the win and held Emerson to a single run on eight hits with a pair of walks and fanned seven batters.
