The Lead: The Emerson baseball team had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh frame, but could not capitalize as the Lions were handed a 4-2 setback at the hands of Newbury College on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the top of the third, junior Tim Quitadamo (Worcester, Mass.) plated the first Emerson run on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • Within Newbury's half of the third, the Nighthawks earned two runs back to claim the 2-1 lead.
  • After Matthew Sobray sent an RBI single up the middle, David Center lifted the Nighthawks to their first lead at 2-1 on his second home run of the season.
  • Newbury added its third run in the home half of the fourth on Dante Serino's RBI single that plated Ian Hruniak.
  • Senior Mitch Moormann (Hollywood, Fla.) doubled in Emerson's second run into the right center gap to bring the score within one at 3-2 in the seventh.
  • After Moormann cut the score down to one, Emerson loaded up the bases with one out yet could not bring anymore runs in as a double play concluded the inning.
  • The Nighthawks notched an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh and bumped their lead to two at 4-2 as Matthew Peluso snuck an RBI single through the left side.
  • Newbury reliever Billy Stephen entered the ninth and retired Emerson on three grounders.
