The Lead: The Emerson baseball team had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh frame, but could not capitalize as the Lions were handed a 4-2 setback at the hands of Newbury College on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the top of the third, junior Tim Quitadamo (Worcester, Mass.) plated the first Emerson run on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
- Within Newbury's half of the third, the Nighthawks earned two runs back to claim the 2-1 lead.
- After Matthew Sobray sent an RBI single up the middle, David Center lifted the Nighthawks to their first lead at 2-1 on his second home run of the season.
- Newbury added its third run in the home half of the fourth on Dante Serino's RBI single that plated Ian Hruniak.
- Senior Mitch Moormann (Hollywood, Fla.) doubled in Emerson's second run into the right center gap to bring the score within one at 3-2 in the seventh.
- After Moormann cut the score down to one, Emerson loaded up the bases with one out yet could not bring anymore runs in as a double play concluded the inning.
- The Nighthawks notched an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh and bumped their lead to two at 4-2 as Matthew Peluso snuck an RBI single through the left side.
- Newbury reliever Billy Stephen entered the ninth and retired Emerson on three grounders.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Junior Nolan Megna (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, Moormann went 1-for-3 with a double and Quitadamo scored both Emerson runs.
- Center went 2-for-4 in the batter's box for Newbury with a homer, Sobray went 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored and Hruniak batted 2-for-3 with a single and double.
- Schwartz lasted four innings in the loss and allowed a trio of runs on six hits.
- Freshman Sam Knox (Sturbridge, Mass.) and senior Cal Laird (Willowbrook, Ill.) combined for the final four innings and gave up one run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
- Camerota pitched 6.1 innings and surrendered a pair of runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and struck out two.
- Jim McGrorry pitched 1.2 relief innings and gave a hit and strikeout as Stephen earned his third save in the ninth with a walk.
