The Lead: On Tuesday afternoon at Barry Allen Field, the Emerson baseball team could not scrape up a win as they were bested, 19-8, by the Springfield Pride in NEWMAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Danny Johnson (Mashpee, Mass.) belted his first home run of the season in the top of the first to give Emerson an early 1-0 lead over Springfield.
- Springfield answered with four runs within their halves of the first and second frame to gain the 4-1 advantage.
- Brandon Drabanski sent a sacrifice fly into left to drive in the first Pride run that was followed by Kyle Allen's two-bagger that drove in a pair to wrap up the first inning.
- Peter Marsicano was able to score the fourth Springfield run as Brandon Russo was picked off in a rundown attempt at first.
- In the third and fourth innings, Emerson was able to scratch a pair of runs across to bring them within one at 4-3 on an RBI double into right by junior Pablo Feldman (Mill Valley, Calif.) and Johnson's grounder to the shortstop.
- After Springfield tallied the go-ahead run on Marsicano's sacrifice fly to left, the Pride crossed the plate eight times in the bottom of the fifth to balloon its lead to 13-3 that consisted of a two-run bomb over the left field wall by Logan Barrett.
- Emerson answered with a two-run sixth inning to bring the score to 13-5.
- Johnson reached on a fielder's choice to plate the Lions fourth run that was followed up by junior Neil Perry's (Middleboro, Mass.) RBI single into the left center gap.
- The Lions threatened for more with the bases loaded and two outs, but Johnson was picked off at home plate to wrap up the inning.
- Through the remaining three innings, Springfield tacked on a pair of runs within each frame to bump its lead to 19-5.
- Emerson's bats remained alive within their half of the ninth inning and added three runs to put the score at 19-8.
- Freshman Cam Beattie (Gilbert, Ariz.) rocketed his first collegiate home run to start off the inning for the Lions before a miscue in center allowed two runs to cross on sophomore CJ Rogers' (Guliford, Conn.) single.
- With runners on second and third and two outs, the Lions concluded the game with a fly ball into left.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Rogers went 3-for-5 at the plate with a trio of singles, one run scored and one RBI.
- Johnson went 1-for-4 with a homer, run scored and three RBIs.
- Junior Nolan Megna (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Feldman each batted a pair of hits including two doubles from Feldman.
- Laird put up a pitching line of 4.1 innings, gave up nine hits and allowed seven runs (six earned) in the loss to match one walk and one strikeout.
- Junior Henry Schwartz (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomores Ethan Young (Amherst, Mass.) and Anthony Pugliese (Massapequa, N.Y.) tossed the final 3.2 frames and gave up a combined 13 hits, 12 runs (11 earned) with six walks and two strikeouts.
- Russo batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Allen and Barrett each racked up a pair of RBIs and hits with three runs scored and Colin King went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
- Kelly was credited with the win through his six inning outing where he allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
- Cole Donovan wrapped up the final three innings and surrendered three runs (two earned) on three hits with a pair of walks and punch outs.
