The Lead: The Emerson baseball team split their doubleheader against the Cazenovia Wildcats today as the Lions continue spring break action. In the first game, freshman Sam Knox (Sturbridge, Mass.) pitched a two-hit, six strikeout complete game to help Emerson take the 1-0 win. The Lions, however, fell 4-1 to the Wildcats in the second game of the day.
GAME ONE - Emerson 1, Cazenovia 0
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Junior Neil Perry (Middleboro, Mass.) led Emerson and finished 1-for-2 at the plate with a single and one run scored, while classmate Pablo Feldman (Mill Valley, Calif.) recorded one RBI.
- Ryan Meyer and Nick Castrello went for a combined 2-for-5, while Meyer also stole two bases.
- Knox was lights out on the mound as he stretched two hits over seven scoreless innings and punched out six batters and walked five.
- Ryan Cooper took the loss for Cazenovia and gave up one run on one hit over six innings as he struck out five.
- Emerson left zero runners on the bags and Cazenovia stranded six, while the Lions outhit the Wildcats, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson crossed home for the game's only run in their half of the first frame on a two-out RBI grounder to the shortstop by Feldman that plated Perry.
- Knox sent the Wildcats down in order over the next three innings before the Wildcats threatened with runners on second and third with one out.
- Cazenovia could not capitalize as Meyer got caught stealing home with the inning closing out with a fly ball to center.
- Once again, the Wildcats threatened to put themselves in front in the top of the sixth with runners on the corners with one out, but Knox escaped the inning unscathed as he got A Basc to go down swinging.
- Knox ceased Cazenovia's hopes of a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as he sent them back to the dugout one by one to seal the 1-0 victory for the Lions.
GAME TWO - Cazenovia 4, Emerson 1
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Senior Mitch Moorman (Hollywood, Fl.) paced Emerson and finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles and stole one base.
- Senior Kyle Becker (Jericho, N.Y.) plated the Lions lone run and went 1-for-2.
- Ricky Mercendetti finished 2-for-4 for Cazenovia in the win with a single, double and one run scored, while Jack Young went 2-for-3 at the plate with a single, double and one RBI.
- Sophomore Anthony Pugliese (Massapequa, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss and surrendered four runs on six hits as well as two walks and one strikeout through 4.1 innings.
- Sophomore Jake Mitchell (Monroe, Ohio) relived Pugliese in 1.1 innings with one walk and a pair of strikeouts.
- Bobby Antonacci earned the win for the Wildcats as he allowed one run on four hits while he struck out nine batters over seven innings.
- Emerson left three runners on the bags, while Cazenovia stranded six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions plated its only run in the top of the third after Becker crossed home on a defensive mishap committed by the Wildcats.
- With the 1-0 lead in their favor, Emerson defensive woes came back to bite in the sixth frame as Cazenovia recorded all four runs within the inning.
- After an error by the pitcher allowed Taylor Enck to plate Cazenovia's first run to square the game, Mercen scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice.
- The Wildcats stretched its lead to 3-1 after Meyer scored on a mishap from the shortstop and sealed the win as Young doubled in the fourth and final run.

- Emerson kicks off RussMatt Central Florida Invitational action against New England College on Thursday, March 9 with the first pitch set for 12:30 p.m.
