The Lead: To begin their 2017 campaign, the Emerson baseball team locked up at 5-1 victory over the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers in non-conference action down at Lake Myrtle Park on Sunday afternoon.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Both junior Pablo Feldman (Mill Valley, Calif.) and senior Danny Johnson (Mashpee, Mass.) went for 2-for-4 with a combined one run scored, two RBIs and a double.
- Junior Tim Quitadamo (Worcester, Mass.) finished 2-for-3 with two singles and one run scored.
- Sophomore CJ Rogers (Guliford, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
- Jacob Leonard led the Iowa Wesleyan offense and went 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI.
- Junior Henry Schwartz (Queens, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season and pitched seven scoreless innings with four hits, punched out five batters and walked four.
- Freshman Sam Knox (Sturbridge, Mass.) pitched two relief innings in his collegiate debut and gave up one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.
- Michael Rojas was tagged with the loss for the Tigers and gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks, two strikeouts through 5.1 innings pitched.
- Everett Swinson and Avery Mobley pitched a combined 3.2 relief innings and allowed two hits and one walk.
- Emerson outhit Iowa Wesleyan, 8-6, while the Lions left eight runners on base and the Tigers stranded 11 runners on the bags.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team were able to get on the board until the top of the fourth when Emerson knocked in its first run on a double by Johnson.
- With two outs in their half of the fifth, the Lions added two more runs to gain a 3-0 lead over the Tigers.
- A sacrifice fly into left field by senior Clint Fontanella (Pelham, N.H.) allowed Rogers to plate Emerson's second run that was followed by a RBI single from Feldman to drive in Quitadamo.
- Emerson continued to do damage with two outs and took the 5-0 lead on a passed ball that allowed junior Neil Perry (Middleboro, Mass.) to plate.
- On a defensive mishap by the Tigers first baseman, the Lions were able to cross home plate for the fifth time as freshman Joe Paladino (Bedminster, N.J.) scored as before Quitadamo was caught stealing to end the sixth inning.
- With Tanner Natzke on second, Leonard batted an RBI single that allowed Natzke to score the lone Tigers run with two outs in their half of the ninth frame.
- Knox regrouped and escaped further trouble and got Josh Sanchez to ground out to seal the 5-1 win.
UP NEXT
- Emerson heads to Orlando, Fla. tomorrow, March 6, to take on Martin Luther in a doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
- Iowa Wesleyan gets back into action tomorrow as well and takes on Lyndon State College in an early 8:00 a.m. contest.
