The Lead: After play being ceased by the snow, the Emerson baseball team returned to action on Thursday afternoon where they suffered an 11-4 non-conference setback to the Rhode Island College Anchormen at the Anchorman Field Baseball Facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Over the first two frames, Rhode Island crossed seven runs across to put Emerson in an early 7-0 deficit.
  • After an error in right field plated the first two Rhode Island runs, a sacrifice fly into left by Shaun Vigeant and a bases-loaded walk put the Anchormen ahead, 4-0.
  • Rhode Island extended its lead to seven within a three-run second inning that was highlighted by Austin Barry's two-RBI single to left field.
  • Emerson capitalized on a mishap by the shortstop within the top of the fourth and put the score at 7-1 after sophomore Ethan Young (Amherst, Mass.) safely reached on a fielder's choice.
  • Mike Webb's single into left drove in Vigeant for the Anchorman's eighth run in the home half of the fifth frame.
  • Within the top of the sixth, Emerson scratched three more runs across to bring them within four at 8-4.
  • Senior Clint Fontanella (Pelham, N.H.) brought in both junior Joey Jacobs (Concord, Mass.) and senior Danny Johnson (Mashpee, Mass.) as he hammered a three-bagger into left field as Young drove in the fourth Lions run on a grounder to short.
  • Rhode Island's ninth run came on a homer from Barry within the bottom of the sixth to allow the Anchormen to pull ahead, 9-2.
  • The Anchorman tacked on its final runs in the bottom of the eighth on Nate Cahoone's double into left and was followed up by an RBI single from Josh Silva.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Junior Pablo Feldman (Mill Valley, Calif.) led Emerson at the plate and went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and run scored, while Fontanella and Young each drove in two runs.
  • Barry went 3-for-3 in the batter's box for the Anchormen with two singles, a homer, with three RBIs and scored three runs.
  • On the mound for Emerson was Pugliese, who pitched one inning in the loss while he allowed six runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks.
  • Sophomores Tim Mainella (Dover, N.H.) and Jake Mitchell (Monroe, Ohio) combined for seven relief innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with two punch outs and five walks.
  • Greaves earned the win for Rhode Island and pitched six innings while he surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits and fanned four batters and walked a pair.
  • Riley Miller, Jake Roy and Myles Levy pitched three combined relief innings and gave up just two hits and struck out six.
