BROCKTON, Mass. - Emerson Baseball hosted their home opener against the Newbury College Nighthawks at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, the new home of Lions Baseball. Despite the Lions earning the first run, the Nighthawks took the day with a final score of 5-2. Emerson is now 3-7 overall while Newbury rises to 8-7.
Starting Pitcher for the Lions was Henry Schwartz who went 6 innings, relieved by Clint Fontanella for the final 3. Playing the full 9 was Jacob Pringle who faced 37 batters with 7 hits.
Pablo Feldman scored first for the Lions after getting on base with a double in the bottom of the 2nd. Steven Cameron hit a double of his own, bringing home Feldman to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
Newbury had the bases loaded at the top of the 4th and scored when Matthew Peluso was hit by a pitch, followed by a walk which scored Ryan Zahornasky and David Center to give Newbury the lead.
The Nighthawks scored again at the top of the 6th when Peluso hit a sacrifice fly to score David Center. The final two Newbury runs came at the top of the 7th and 8th when Ian Hruniak and Craig Barnett scored.
In the bottom of the 9th, the Lions Kyle Becker reached first after being hit by a pitch, and advanced to 2nd when Ethan Young singled. Senior Jim Cain hit a long single that gave Becker time to run home, as the game closed 5-2.
Next up for the Lions is a double header against Rivier and Mass. Maritime this Sunday, opening pitch at 11:00am. The Nighthawks travel to Lasell on the 23rd for a 7:00pm meeting.
