Baseball Defeats Rivier in Season Finale, 5-2

WATERTOWN, Mass.—The Emerson College Baseball team closed out its 2015 campaign with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Rivier University Raiders, Friday night at Victory Field in a non-conference game.

 

With the win, the Lions finish the season with a 2-27 record and 1-16 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, while Rivier falls to 13-19 overall and 8-5 in the GNAC.

 

Emerson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings of play on an RBI single by senior designated hitter Kyle Muhlfriedel to score Connor Damiano.

 

Sophomore Mitch Moormann sent a sacrifice fly to right field two batters later to plate Muhlfriedel.

 

Rivier struck back with two outs in the top of the third, as David Cusack scored on a bases-loaded infield error to trim the Lions' lead to 2-1.

 

EC added a run in the bottom of the frame as junior left fielder Jim Cain came in to score with two outs.

 

The Raiders pushed another run across in the top of the fourth with two outs, as Jeremy Ball smacked an RBI single to right field to bring home Nick Gagnon to make it 3-2 in favor of the Lions.

 

Emerson tacked on the final two runs in the eighth without recording a hit in the inning as the team went on to collect its second win of the season.

 

The Lions and Raiders each managed six hits in the game, with the difference being Rivier left 12 runners on base to Emerson's seven.

 

Sophomore right fielder Connor Damiano led the charge for the Lions with a 1-for-2 day at the plate with two walks, two stolen bases, an RBI and one run scored.

 

Junior right fielder Jeremy Ball went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Rivier in the defeat.

 

Sophomore southpaw Cal Laird earned the win on the hill, as he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked five and struck out four in six innings of work.

 

Senior Lucas Palma suffered the loss for the Raiders. He gave up three runs (all earned) on six hits, walked one and struck out three as he lasted 6 1/3 innings on the bump.

 

The Emerson Baseball team bids farewell to senior captains Julian Rifkind and Zach Dean and senior outfielder Kyle Muhlfriedel and wishes them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.
