Baseball Falls to Babson, 12-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) had three hits, including a triple, and drove in a career-high six runs as Babson College defeated visiting Emerson College, 12-1, to open a three-game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series on Friday afternoon at Govoni Field.
 
With the win, Babson is now 12-15 overall and 8-6 in conference play, while Emerson drops to 1-21 overall and 1-10 in the NEWMAC.
 
Sophomore Jake Weiss (Irvine, Calif.) went 4-for-5 with a double and a career-high five runs scored, while senior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) homered for the Beavers. First-year Adam Ayala (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) also had two hits and drove in a run in the win.
 
Junior Jim Cain (Wakefield, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a double, while senior Zach Dean (Vero Beach, Fla.) tripled and scored for the Lions.
 
The Green and White jumped on top with three runs in the top of the first. Weiss and Ayala started the frame with back-to-back singles, and then came home on Gonzalez's triple down the right field line. Sophomore Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) made it 3-0 when he plated Gonzalez with a sacrifice fly to left.
 
Gonzalez came through again in the second, driving in senior Joe Zanca (Braintree, Mass.), who singled to start the inning, and Weiss with a two-out base hit to give the Beavers a 5-0 lead. Weiss reached on a bunt single to start the fourth and later came around to score on a wild pitch to make it a six-run game.
 
Emerson scored its only run of the game in the last of the fourth as Dean smacked a one-out triple to left and came home on an RBI ground out by first-year Pablo Feldman (Mill Valley, Calif.) to get within 6-1. Babson answered an inning later though, as MacPhee hit a solo blast to take a 7-1 lead.
 
Weiss doubled with one out in the eighth, and Ayala and Gonzalez produced consecutive RBI singles to stretch the Beavers' lead to 9-1. The Green and White then tacked on three unearned runs in the top of the ninth, the last coming on a sacrifice fly by first-year Zeke Zabinski (Blue Bell, Pa.) to make it 12-1.
 
Senior Barrett O'Neill (Ashland, Mass.) moved to 5-1 on the year for the Green and White, allowing just one earned run and four hits while striking out two over five innings. Sophomore Graham Stack (Arlington, Mass.) struck out three and gave up just one hit over the final four innings.
 
Senior Julian Rifkind (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the loss for the Lions after allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits over 7.1 innings.
