Box Score After a low scoring 7 innings, Worcester Polytechnical Institute (WPI) became explosive in the 8th inning scoring 11 runs and pulling ahead to win 12-2. Emerson's baseball record is now 0-12 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC. WPI's record now stands at 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.
After 2 outs and 2 men on base in the bottom of the first, WPI's Sean Greene hit a triple, bringing Nick Comei to home plate for the first run of the game.
Innings 2-5 didn't have any runs batted in. Overall in those innings, Emerson had 0 players left on base and WPI only had 2.
The bottom of the sixth inning allowed Emerson to pull ahead. Emerson's Pablo Feldman, freshman, stepped up to bat while junior Jim Cain was on third, Mitch Moorman was on second and Tim Quitadamo was on first; the bases were loaded. Feldman hit a single to center field allowing both Cain and Moorman to run through home plate to score. This put Emerson ahead of WPI, 2-1.
The seventh inning had no runs batted in for either team, but WPI did leave 3 players on base.
The eighth inning changed the course of the game. WPI's Anthony Capuano hit a ball out to center field allowing Alex Vendetti to score from third base and Sean Greene to advance to third base. Up next at bat was Zach Blanchard who followed suit and hit a double down the left field line allowing Sean Greene to pass home plate and DJ Oulette to reach third base. Adding to the streak, Sean Kelley was up at bat next, hitting a single to the left corner allowing both DJ Oulette and Zach Blanchard to score.
Bases loaded, WPI's Nick Comei went up to bat hitting a single that resulted in a base gaining error. This allowed both John Mulready and Sean Kelley to score. After a fielding error near second base both Nick Comei and Vinny D'Ambrosio scored.
To wrap up the eighth inning, Alex Vendetti scored after a dropped fly ball, hit by teammate DJ Oulette. To finish this inning Anthony Capuno hit a double allowing DJ Oulette and Evan Lacroix to score; WPI brought in 11 runs this inning. The final score of the game was 12-2, WPI.
Emerson Baseball's next game will be on March 26th against the Coast Guard Academy. Game to be played at Gordon College at 3:00pm.
