Box Score 2 The Lions are winless in five tries so far on their annual spring break trip to Ft. Myers, Florida. After dropping an opening day decision to Hiram College, 10-3, the drama intensified on day two in a doubleheader against Wilmington College.
Entering the seventh and final inning of the first game down four runs, the Lions forged a comeback and pulled within one on an extra base hit by junior Steve Cameron. Unfortunately for Emerson, Cameron was thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple, effectively ending the game.
In the second game, the Lions fell behind Wilmington 6-0, staging a fifth and sixth inning rally that pulled Emerson within one heading into the seventh inning. After putting the tying run on second and the winning run on first, sophomore Mitch Moormann struck out to end the game.
The two games played Tuesday against Eastern Nazerene College and University of Pittsburgh, Greensburg, respectively, both slipped away from the Lions early on. Against ENC, they were trailing 10-1 by the end of the fourth inning and ended up losing 14-2. Against U. Pitt, senior captain Julian Rifkind allowed 8 runs in ⅔ innings, and the Lions went on to lose 14-3.
Senior captain Zach Dean has led the team offensively, batting .550 in the first two games. In 11 at-bats, sophomore Clint Fontanella is hitting .727. Six players for the Lions are hitting over .300 and are hitting .327 as a team.
Hitting overall hasn't been the problem, but a lack of clutch hitting combined with 35 walks and 15 hit batsmen has hurt the Lions thus far.
