Box Score MALDEN, Mass. – A close game between the Emerson Baseball Team and the Springfield Pride was broken open in the fifth inning as the Lions fell 14-1 to the visiting Pride on Sunday. EC is now 3-21 overall and 1-12 in conference play as Springfield improves to 12-10 on the year and 6-7 in the NEWMAC.
The Pride were able to put one across in the first inning after an error by the Lions, but Emerson found a way to scratch back in the bottom of the third after a lead-off hit by Clint Fontanella came around with an error and a wild pitch to knot it up at 1-1.
Cal Laird held the line for Emerson until the fifth when the Pride's bats fired up as they went off for six runs off of five hits and with the help of a few wild pitches. Springfield put up another run in the sixth before an error in the eighth cost two more runs on Emerson's tab. The Pride would spark up a lethal ninth as well with four more runs off three hits to close out the 14-1 win.
SC's Frank Calabrese led the way for the Pride with a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored and two RBIs wile CJ Monroe, Keith Cotnoir and Anthony Faggiana all pushed across two RBIs as well. In the win Eric Chase went seven innings for the Pride with no earned runs and seven strike outs.
Next up the Lions will travel to Springfield on Tuesday to face the Pride again.
