Box Score 2 NASHUA, N.H. – With three Lions swinging .500 or better on the day and yet another stellar outing from Nick Kelly, the Emerson Baseball Team split their doubleheader with Rivier Saturday. RU took the first game 10-3 before EC won 7-5 in game two to move to 1-18 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Game one sent Brandon Topp to start for the Lions as RU took a 3-0 lead after three complete before Emerson stepped up. EC finally clawed onto the board in the fourth inning as Andy Brightman started it off with a walk that Cal Ciarcia followed up with a bunt single. A two-RBI single from Steven Cameron gave EC their first runs of the game to make it 3-2.
Rivier fired back though, taking the two back in the bottom of the fourth before adding three more in the fifth. A lead-off triple from Cal Ciarcia helped Emerson in the sixth as Steven Cameron brought another run home with an RBI sac fly. That was all EC could muster though as they fell 10-3 in game one.
Game two was a different story though as Nick Kelly took the ball for the Lions where he promptly threw two shutout innings for EC giving the Lions the opportunity to score first. They took advantage of that in the third with lead-off double from Evan Johnson getting followed up by a walk to James Sullivan. Both base runners were brought home shortly after an error by the Riv second baseman brought them in.
RU fired back in the third with a run of their own, but Emerson locked in for the fourth inning with Cal Ciarcia leading off with a single to left that Evan Johnson plated with an RBI double to right field to make it 3-1. The Raiders answered though, knotting it in the fourth.
Emerson took advantage of an error in the fifth that James Sullivan brought home with an RBI sac fly as EC took the lead for good in the game. They broke it open in the seventh as well, adding three more off three hits and a two-RBI single by Steven Cameron as they ran off with the 7-5 win.
The Lions will return home for their next match-up against Norwich on Sunday. Game one is set for noon in Topsfield, Mass. at Masconomet Regional High School.
