Box Score 2 NEWTON, Mass. – With for Lions hitting .500 or better Saturday afternoon the Emerson Baseball Team collected a split with the Lasell Lasers. LC took game one 7-2 before Emerson answered the score in kind in game two to move to 2-25 overall and 2-12 in conference play.
Game one sent Conor McDonough to the mound for the Lions where he threw a shutout inning before the Lasers climbed on the board in the second with the help of a Lion fielding miscue to take the 2-0 lead.
EC matched the two runs in the top of the third though as Jesse Francese led off with a single that was followed up with a James Sullivan double and an RBI ground out by Johnny Hasney. With some crafty footwork on the basepaths, Sullivan made a heads up play to snake home on a pick-off attempt at first to make it two all.
The offense wouldn't be able to muscle around another run in the game though as Emerson left four on base for the duration. Lasell stepped up for to add two more runs in the fourth and fifth to edge away with one last run crossing the plate in the sixth to close out the 7-2 win.
Game two saw Brandon Topp head out to throw a complete game gem, allowing only two runs off six hits in seven innings. The game proved to be a solid pitching duel with both hurlers going scoreless through three complete before the Lions broke it open in a big way.
Emerson opened up the fourth with Zach Dean reaching on an error before Cal Ciarcia doubled to put runners in scoring position to set up Johnny Hasney's RBI single. With the bases loaded it was Jesse Francese that added a run, drawing a walk before a two-RBI single from Conor McDonough made it 4-0. Topping it all off on the inning was Jim Cain 's two-RBI single to finish the 6-0 rout.
The Lions added another insurance run in the sixth inning as well to put the game out of the reach of the Lasers as Xavier Garcia doubled before coming around to score on a wild pitch.
The Lasers finally scrapped onto the board with their last ups in the seventh, putting up two runs off a triple, but that was all the Emerson pitching staff would allow, closing out the 7-2 win.
The Lions will close out their regular season Sunday as they set to host Albertus Magnus. Game one is set for noon in Malden, Mass at Maplewood Field.
