Baseball Falls In Extra Inning Heartbreaker To Gallaudet

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A stellar 3-for-4 outing from Zach Dean and Andy Brightman's three scoreless innings kept the Emerson Baseball Team in the hunt Saturday afternoon as they fell in an extra innings heartbreaker, 7-6 (10) to Gallaudet University. The Lions are not 0-9 on the year while GU moves to 4-6.

Emerson started the game off with a quick hit to the scoreboard as they put up a run in the first inning off a Johnny Hasney single up the middle. Hasney was able to find his way home after Cal Ciarcia singled to push him to third when a throw to catch Ciarcia stealing second gave Hasney the free pass home.

The Bison were ready to make a game of it though as they put up a run in the second to tie it before taking the lead in the third with two more runs. They pushed their lead to 4-1 with another run in the fourth before the Lions stepped up their offense in the fifth.

Starting off the fifth with an error, Zach Dean tripled to bring home James Sullivan which set up a Cal Ciarcia sac fly to left to make it 4-3 GU. The lead wasn't to stay in Gallaudet's favor though as Emerson snaked it back in the eight with three more runs with a leadoff double to left center by Zach Dean. An RBI single from Jesse Francese tied the score before a throwing error by the GU second baseman brought in two more to make it 6-4.

It looked promising after an EC shutout inning in the eight, but the Lions couldn't put it away as the Bison used their last out for some heroics as Jeremy Adams lifted a two run shot to left field to make it 6-6 and send it to extras.

EC wasn't able to answer in the 10th as the Bison were able to a scratch a run across after taking a leadoff walk that found his way home after an error to give GU the 7-6 win.

The Lions return home now as they set for their home opener this week where they'll face Southern Vermont this Wednesday in a doubleheader. Game one first pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Victory Fields in Watertown, Mass.
