MIT Downs Baseball in NEWMAC Opener

Finnegan and Dwyer homer, drive in four to power Engineers

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. (March 24, 2026) – Massachusetts Institute of Technology jumped in front with a six run first inning and did not look back in posting a 17-2 victory over Emerson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball opener for both at New England Baseball Complex this afternoon.

Juniors John Dwyer and Jack Finnegan each homered and drove in four RBI to pace the MIT lineup. Dwyer finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored to go with the home run and four RBI, while Finnegan hit 2-for-4 with three RBI and a stolen base. First year Dalton Chi batted 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Engineers, while junior Maximo Del Pino chipped in with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Senior Chase Rubin earned the win (1-0) on the mound, scattering three hits over four innings, allowing an earned run while striking out eight and walking just one.

Junior Braeden O'Connell and first year Vincent Fuller each doubled for Emerson, with O'Connell finishing 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI and Fuller hitting 1-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore Liam Curley was also 1-for-2 at the plate for the Lions, while classmate Aidan Callahan chipped in a run scored.

Emerson used six pitchers over the contest and was hindered by 11 walks ands four hit batters over six innings.

MIT grabbed the lead with six runs in the first inning with the benefit of three hits, taking advantage of three walks, two hit batters, an error and two wild pitches before Del Pino put a cap on the inning with a two-run double down the right field line.

After MIT tacked on a run in the second, Emerson broke through in the top of the third as Callahan led off with a single and later scored when junior Justin Fields was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Engineers quickly answered and broke the game open with five runs in the home half, punctuated by a three-run homer by Dwyer. Finnigan put an exclamation point on the victory with grand slam in a five-run fifth for MIT after the Lions had scored a second run in the of the frame on O'Connell's RBI double.
