Box Score MALDEN, Mass. – A four-for-five night from James Sullivan and stellar outings on the mound by Julian Rifkind and Brendan Topp powered the Emerson Baseball Team Tuesday night as they topped the Lesley Lynx 16-8 in Malden at Maplewood Park. Brendan Topp took the win on the day as the Lions move to 8-23 on the year while Topp picks up his first win to go to 1-0.
The Lynx came out swinging in the first inning as they tacked two on the board to put the Lions on the defensive where EC fired back in the bottom of the inning with four of their own as a Geoff Lopes double brought in two before Cal Ciarcia and Drew Risk both put RBIs as Emerson jumped to a 4-2 lead.
They opened the gap a bit more in the second inning with an RBI single from Peter Maltzan before the Lynx decided to make a game of it adding three of their own in the fourth, but again the Lions weren't having it as two more EC runs trickled across the plate in the fourth inning off a wild pitch and another Maltzan RBI.
Lesley wasn't going quietly though as they took the lead in the sixth with four runs but Emerson wasn't losing this one though as they broke it open in EC fashion in the bottom of the inning with four runs off four hits and an error as Cal Ciarcia put up another RBI along with Drew Risk and Austin Fontanella.
The Lynx scratched back two runs in the seventh, but the Lions put the nail in the coffin in the eighth with a Ryan Garber two RBI single and an James Sullivan RBI for three more runs as Brendan Topp came in to slam the door on Lesley with 3.2 innings pitched while allowing only one run and striking out six en route to the win.
Up next the Lions will travel to Johnson & Wales tomorrow where they'll face the Wildcats in a doubleheader in GNAC baseball action.
