Baseball Edged By Gordon Twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WENHAM, Mass. – Even with Geoff Lopes championing a .500 average on the day while Jeff Kolb and Nick Kelly combined to allow only nine hits to their opponents 14, the Emerson Baseball Team fell 5-3 and 2-1 Tuesday afternoon to the hosting Gordon Fightin' Scots. Kelly and Kolb took the losses for the Lions to fall to 1-4 and 2-3 on the year as Emerson drops to 5-19 overall.

Game one saw the Lions shoot themselves in the paw again leaving nine on base to Gordon's four, but with Nick Kelly pitching a perfect three innings the Lions did take to the scoreboard first in the match-up as they lead-ff with a Geoff Lopes single before collecting on a Scots error. Drew Risk dug in next to lace an RBI single to score Lopes before Austin Fontanella cracked another to make it 2-0 Lions.

An RBI double from Gordon cut the lead in half, but things looked solid for Emerson as they added another run in the fifth with Geoff Lopes leading the charge again with a two-out single before the Fightin' Scots pitching melted down to allow three straight walks to bring a run home making it 3-1. The defense couldn't support Nick Kelly in the end though as Gordon surged back to tack three on him off two errors in the fifth before a solo shot put it out of reach in the sixth to finish the 5-3 final.

Game two sent out Jeff Kolb to the mound for the Lions where he was perfect through two while Emerson again looked to have the advantage as they scored in the first inning off a Cal Ciarcia double that lead-off the inning. A Ryan Garber ground out to move Ciarcia to third followed by a Peter Maltzan sac fly gave EC the 1-0 leg up after one.

From there the pitchers duel was on until the third when the Scots finally broke through against Kolb, with one pitch deciding the game in the end as a walk was brought home by a two run shot in the only offense of the game for Gordon. It would prove to be enough though as the Lions couldn't find timely clutch hitting, falling 2-1.

Emerson returns for more GNAC action tomorrow as they set for a doubleheader at Suffolk starting at 2 p.m.
