Box Score WENHAM, Mass. – A four-for-five outing from Peter Maltzan and three RBIs on the day from Drew Risk coupled with Jeff Kolb's eight strikeout outing led the Emerson Baseball Team on Tuesday as they broke out the bats to pound the Gordon Fighting Scots 8-4 at J. Tec White Field. The win improves Emerson to 5-11 on the year as Gordon drops to 4-9 overall.
The Lions wasted no time putting Gordon on the ropes as they slapped two runs on the board in the first inning with four hits and RBIs from Drew Risk and Ryan Garber. EC broke it open even further in the second inning as they opened the inning with singles from Austin Fontanella and Adam Speakman before an RBI from Geoff Lopes started the party as Zach Dean batted in another RBI before a Gordon error made it a quick 5-0.
The Fighting Scots did fairly little fighting until EC held a 6-0 lead by the bottom of the fifth before an RBI double brought home one and a Lion error saw another one come in to cut it to 6-2. Emerson answered in the sixth inning with Peter Maltzan stepping up again for a single before Drew Risk crushed a triple for two RBIs to give EC an 8-2 lead.
All the Scots seemed to have only a bit of spark left though as they were able to put together three hits for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Jeff Kolb and Brendan Topp combined to slam the door shut on the win as the Lions rode out the 8-4 final.
The Lions return to their home park this Saturday as they set to host GNAC action against the Anna Maria AMCATS in a doubleheader at noon and 2:30 p.m. in Malden at Maplewood Field.
