The Lead: Backed by goals from juniors Paige Haley (San Diego, Calif.) and Jess Frost (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), the Emerson women's soccer team snapped Springfield College's six game winning streak with a 2-1 win over the Pride in NEWMAC women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Springfield outshot Emerson, 16-4, and held the 4-3 edge in corner kicks over the LIons.
- The Pride committed six infractions to the Lions three.
- Haley and Frost each collected goals for Emerson, Frost's being her first net of the season, while Haley also picked up an assist.
- In the net for Emerson was freshman Mary Elizabeth Allen (Miami Shores, Fl.), earned the win in her first collegiate debut in goal with one goal allowed and four saves through 90 minutes.
- Dakota Kelly produced Springfield's lone goal with the assist credited to Nikki Kerr.
- Ciara Boucher shouldered her first loss of the season, allowing a pair of goals and came away with one save.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams recorded all their goals within the first half with Emerson on top, 2-1, through 45 minutes and outshot Springfield, 6-3.
- Emerson opened scoring barely two and a half minutes into the first half when Haley recovered a loose ball in Springfield's defensive zone and snuck the shot past Boucher to put the Lions on top, 1-0.
- 58 ticks after Emerson got on the board, Springfield knotted the game at 1-all after Kelly recovered Kerr's rebounded shot and found the back of the net.
- The Lions pushed ahead, 2-1, with less than a minute left in the half as Haley crossed a past to the opposite side of the field to Frost, who beat the defender and fired the second Lions goal.
