The Lead: The Emerson women's lacrosse team shouldered an 8-5 loss to the Springfield Pride in NEWMAC play to close out its 2017 regular season where senior Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) and freshman Jenna Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.) each notched a pair of goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shelby Corsano struck for the game's first goal at the 20:15 mark of the first half and sparked a string of three consecutive goals, including two from Amanda Nusbaum, spanning over the next 2:30 to gain the 4-0 lead.
- Springfield built onto its lead and added its fifth goal at 14:13 on an unassisted net by Kayla Schroeher.
- Emerson erased its five-goal deficit and closed to within three at 5-2 in the final 10:53 of the half on two free position goals from Tomsky and Weber.
- The Pride increased its lead to four at 6-2 thanks to a net from Corsano to open the second half that was soon followed by Weber's second goal to put the Lions within three.
- A free-position goal from Nusbaum pushed Springfield ahead, 7-3, with 19:44 on the clock before Emerson inched within three at 7-4 on Tomsky's second net.
- After junior Megan Messuri (Stoneham, Mass.) put Emerson just two goals back at 7-5, Taylor Kane buried an insurance goal at the 13:06 mark put the final score at 8-5.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Weber and Tomsky each struck for two goals apiece and Messuri notched one, as Weber also scooped up a team-best four ground balls and caused five turnovers and sophomore Mia Doyon (Grosse Point, Mi.) secured three draw control wins.
- Modica came up with 12 stops while she manned the Emerson net for the full 60 minutes.
- Nusbaum led Springfield with a trio of goals and Ann Mahoney picked up four ground balls and caused an overall game-high five turnovers.
- Anderson made 12 stops as well for Springfield within the full 60 minutes in net.
- Springfield outshot Emerson (23-20), held the advantage in ground balls (20-11) and locked up the 8-6 edge in draw controls.
- The Lions finished 14-for-28 on clears and the Pride went a perfect 14-for-14, while both teams countered two out of their six free-position opportunities.

- Emerson enters the NEWMAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will square off against No. 5 MIT on Saturday, April 29 in the quarterfinal round.
- Springfield returns to action to host the NEWMAC Championship Semifinal on Saturday, May 8.
