The Lead: On Saturday afternoon, the Emerson women's lacrosse team locked up a 15-5 NEWMAC victory over the Smith Pioneers backed by six goals from senior Meredith Weber (East Caldwell, N.J.) and four from junior Tara Windsor (Palm City, Fl.). Prior to the game, the Lions honored its two seniors, Weber and Olivia Still (Hebron, Conn.) for their hard work and dedication to the women's lacrosse program throughout their collegiate careers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emily Briggs gave Smith the early 1-0 just three minutes into the first half at the 26:55 mark.
- Emerson capitalized on a costly Smith penalty that allowed Windsor to net the 1-all equalizer with nine seconds left on the foul.
- At the 13:31 mark, Clelie Fielding put Smith up 2-1 before Emerson tallied a string of three goals to give themselves a two-goal cushion at 4-2.
- Freshman Jenna Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.) knotted the score 2-all as junior Brooke Goshtigian (Acton, Mass.) followed up with a net 48 seconds later before Weber put in the fourth Emerson goal.
- Sydney Garner closed Smith back within one at 4-3 at 7:46, but sophomore Mia Doyon (Grosse Pointe, Mi.) pulled Emerson ahead by a pair at 5-3 to close out the half.
- The Lions continued to attack within the early minutes of second half and extended their lead to five at 8-3.
- Windsor found the back of the net at 27:00 to put the score at 6-3 as Weber and junior Megan Messuri (Stoneham, Mass.) dished out goals to give Emerson the five-goal lead.
- The Pioneers cut the lead in half at 8-4 on a net by Caroline Myran with 16:31 left to play in the second half.
- Freshman Camille Mumford (Yardley, Penn.) set up the next pair of Emerson goals to Windsor and Weber put the score at 10-4 before Smith cut the lead in half again at 10-5 on a goal by Bella Ferraro.
- With the five goal-lead, Emerson dished out a trio of goals from Tomsky and a pair from Weber to extend the Lions advantage to 13-5 with 3:15 to play in the second.
- Emerson closed out the 15-5 win as Weber and Windsor dished a pair of goals within the final 20 seconds of regulation.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Along with Weber and Windsor, Tomsky and Messuri each tallied goals for the Lions.
- Freshman Sophia Gripari (London, United Kingdom) and Mumford both recorded a pair of assists. and sophomore Paige Haley (San Diego, Calif.) caused four turnovers.
- Weber also won nine draw controls and scooped 10 ground balls.
- Junior Kristina Modica (East Moriches, N.Y.) was credited with the win and made four saves through 60 minutes between the pipes for Emerson.
- Fielding recorded a goal and assist to lead Smith, while Myran scooped up six ground balls, won two draw controls and caused a trio of turnovers.
- Sarah Price played the full 60 in net for Smith and made 16 saves.
- Emerson held the advantage in draw controls (17-4), shots (40-10), and finished 18-for-20 in clears and were 6-of-19 in free position shots.
- Smith went 19-for-30 in clears and finished just 0-for-1 on free position opportunities.
