The Lead: Senior Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) found the back of the net five times and pushed her season goal total to a career-high 54 goals to help the Emerson women's lacrosse team hold off Wellesley in a 12-11 home NEWMAC victory on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson found the back of the net four times within the first 10 and a half minutes of the first half to gain the lead 4-0 lead.
- Junior Brooke Goshtigian (Acton, Mass.) buried the first Emerson goal past Wellesley goalie Wendy Nettleton to kick off the Lions scoring at 25:19 followed by a trio of goals from Weber.
- Wellesley added two goals into the scoring mix that started with a net by Lena Engbretson at 11:27 before she set up Dacia Persky to put the Blue within two at 4-2.
- After the Blue cut the Lions lead in half, freshman Jenna Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.) and junior Megan Messuri (Stoneham, Mass.) tacked two more goals to give the Lions a 6-2 lead with 8:31 left to play in the half.
- Engbretson netted her second goal of the half at the 5:06 mark to cut Emerson's lead in half again at 6-3.
- A little over a minute after Engbretson put in Wellesley's third goal, the Blue answered with two more goals from Mary Lemay and and Mayu Kikuchi to bring the score to 6-5 with 3:26 to play.
- Tomsky gave Emerson some wiggle room at the 2:05 mark with a pair of goals to pull the Lions up by three at 8-5 to close out the half.
- At the 25:30 mark of the second frame, Messuri dished out her second net to give Emerson the four goal lead at 9-5 that was followed by a goal from Nikki Sharkin at 24:40 to put the score at 9-6.
- A Wellesley penalty set up Emerson for the man advantage as Goshtigian found the back of the net for the second time at 17:27 to up the Lions lead to four at 10-6.
- Weber slipped her fourth net past Nettleton to give Emerson a five-point cushion at 11-6 a little over two minutes later.
- Wellesley closed to within four again at 11-7 after Sharkin snuck her second goal past junior goalie Kristina Modica (East Moriches, N.Y.) at 13:08.
- Weber saw her fifth goal find the back of the net at the 9:10 mark of the half with score now 12-7 in Emerson's favor.
- Emerson had its five-goal lead quickly erased after Lemay put in a trio of goals to close Wellesley to within two at 12-10 as Sharkin's net nudged Wellesley to within one at 12-11 at 3:31.
- The Lions held possession for the remaining 2:37 of the game to hold off the Blue.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Weber paced Emerson with an overall game best five goals followed by a trio of goals from Tomsky and a pair from Goshtigian and Messuri.
- Weber also won seven draw controls and freshman Sophia Gripari (London, United Kingdom) scooped up six ground balls.
- Modica manned the net for the full 60 minutes, made 11 saves and caused a pair of turnovers.
- Lemay netted four goals to lead Wellesley and Sharkin had three goals with a pair of assists and a pair of caused turnovers.
- Jenna Gubner scooped up four ground balls, Engbretson and Courtney Peterson each won four draw controls with Peterson also causing two turnovers.
- Nettleton made seven saves while in between the pipes for 60 minutes and allowed 12 goals in the loss.
- Emerson held the 24-17 advantage in ground balls, while Wellesley held the advantage in draw controls (15-9) and shots (33-28).
- The Lions finished 14-for-18 in clears and 5-for-8 in free position shots, while the Blue went 11-for-13 in clears and 1-for-11 in free position shots.
