The Lead: Senior Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) found the back of the net four times for the Lions, yet it was five goals from Katie Peters that helped edge Wheaton (Mass.) past the Emerson women's lacrosse team, 15-12, in NEWMAC action on Wednesday night. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Peters snuck a trio of goals past Emerson junior goalie Kristina Modica (East Moriches, N.Y.) within the first four and a half minutes to put Wheaton ahead, 3-0. 
  • Weber and freshman Sophia Gripari (London, United Kingdom) netted two goals to close Emerson within one at 3-2 at the 21:37 mark. 
  • After Angela Mallis tacked on the fourth Lyons goal, junior Tara Windsor (Palm City, Fl.) poured in a pair of goals to square the score at 4-all. 
  • Wheaton strung together the next four goals to extend its lead to 8-4 before Windsor netted her third goal of the half to bring Emerson within three at 8-5. 
  • Through the final 9:17 of the half, Wheaton registered the last three of four goals to enter halftime with the 11-6 advantage. 
  • Gripari snuck in her second goal of the game at the 28:21 mark of the second half to put the score at 11-7 until Wheaton answered with a pair to put the Lyons up by six at 13-7. 
  • Nets from freshman Jenna Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.) and Weber with a two minute span close the Lions to within four at 13-9 as sophomore Mia Doyon (Grosse Pointe, Mi.) put in a goal at 9:58 with score now at 13-10. 
  • Lilly Callahan and Giovana Bishop dished out goals to increase the Lyons lead to 15-11 before Gripari completed a hat trick with 12 ticks left in the half with the Lions 12th goal. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Weber slipped in a team-best four goals for Emerson and junior Megan Messuri (Stoneham, Mass.) recorded a pair of assists. 
  • Weber also scooped up five ground balls and won nine draw controls. 
  • Modica played the first 44:08 between the pipes for Emerson with nine saves, while freshman Sofia Naumovski (Yorba Linda, Calif.) wrapped up the final 15:52 and had two saves. 
  • Peters netted five goals for Wheaton, Hannah Gasperoni recorded three assists, Callahan scooped up four ground balls and Lydia Regan caused five turnovers. 
  • Galicia Rothe played the first 10:33 in the net for Wheaton with no saves and Molly Witten manned the net for the final 49:27 with nine saves. 
  • Emerson held the advantage in ground balls (19-18), draw controls (15-14) and tied Wheaton with 11 clears each. 
  • Wheaton had the 34-28 shot advantage over Emerson. 
  • The Lions went 5-for-15 in free position shots, while the Lyons were 1-for-4.
