Weber's Six Goals Sends Women's Lacrosse Past Mount Holyoke, 14-11, To Open NEWMAC Action

The Lead: Setup by senior Meredith Weber's (East Caldwell, N.J.) six goals and season-high 14 draw control wins, the Emerson women's lacrosse team opened up NEWMAC action with a 14-11 win over the Mount Holyoke Lyons on Wednesday night. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • After a scoreless 9:24 to start off the first half, it was Mount Holyoke who broke the scoreless drought as Leila Kouakou slipped the ball past Emerson junior goalie Kristina Modica (East Moriches, N.Y.) put the Lyons on top, 1-0, at 20:35. 
  • A little over a minute later after Mount Holyoke grabbed the 1-0 lead, Emerson answered with a goal of their on Weber's 1-all equalizer at 19:33. 
  • Kouakou netted her second goal to give the Lyons a 2-1 lead before back-to-back net by Weber pulled the Lions in front 3-2 with 15:33 left to play in the half. 
  • Emerson continued to build onto its lead behind a trio of nets to pull them ahead by four at 6-2. 
  • After a goal by freshman Jenna Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.) put the score at 4-2, nets from Weber and freshman Sophia Gripari (London, United Kingdom) extended the Lions edge. 
  • With 4:54 in the half, Kouakou complete a hat trick to cut the lead in half to 6-3 to close out the opening half. 
  • Mount Holyoke closed within one of Emerson after the Lyons tacked on a pair of nets through the first eight and a half minutes of the second half. 
  • Mary LaVigne's goal at 27:50 to brought the score to 6-4 before Charlotte Wagner capitalized on a free-position opportunity that inched them to one at 6-5.
  • Gripari netted Emerson's first goal since 6:31 of the first half to extend their lead to 7-5 as the Lions went on to score the next five of six goals to balloon the score to 12-6 in their favor.
  • Following goals from junior Tara Windsor (Palm City, Fl.) and Weber, Julia Lankin set up Wagner for her second net of the game with the score now at 9-6. 
  • Once again, Emerson strung another trio of scores together on goals by Weber, sophomore Mia Doyon (Grosse Point Park, Mi.) and Windsor to give the Lions their biggest lead of six. 
  • Mount Holyoke crept back again and earned a pair of points back on nets from Kouakou and Kaitlin Braz to push the score to 12-8 before Doyon and Tomsky lifted Emerson back in front by six at 14-8.
  • Through the final 3:26, Braz registered back-to-back nets and one from Wagner crept Mount Holyoke back to within three at 14-11. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Weber also had one assist to go along with her six goals and 14 draw controls as she and Doyon both scooped up nine ground balls each. 
  • Junior Brooke Goshtigian (Acton, Mass.) and Weber each caused a trio of turnovers. 
  • Modica played the full 60 between the pipes in the win for Emerson with nine saves. 
  • Kouakou found the back of the net four times for Mount Holyoke and Lankin had one assist, while Wagner and Braz each tallied three goals apiece. 
  • Braz also scooped up nine ground balls and three caused turnovers and Rankin and Haley Subocz both recorded a pair of draw control wins. 
  • Mia Wysocki was tagged with the loss for Mount Holyoke and made eight saves through 60 minutes.
  • Emerson held the advantage in ground balls (40-32), dominated in draw controls (20-7), shots (34-24) and went 14-for-18 in clears and 6-for-12 in free position chances.
  • Mount Holyoke went 15-for-26 in clears and finished 4-for-9 with the free-position opportunity.
