Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW YORK, New York - Freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.) recorded a two-match total of 29 digs to power the Emerson women's volleyball team to a sweep on the second and final day of the NYU Labor Day Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Lions swept Hunter, 3-0 and grabbed the 3-2 five-set second match victory over Skidmore.

Fara Cohen was named to the All-Invitational Team for her impressive performance over the weekend.

EMERSON 3, Hunter 0

Right out of the gate, Emerson grabbed the 25-23 first set win and never looked back. Within the first set, the Lions hit .270. Hunter hitting -.026 allowed Emerson to easily notch the 25-16 win in the second frame. The Purple & Yellow completed the sweep with a 25-18 win in the third and final set.

Edwards recorded 10 kills on 25 swings, along with 10 digs. Sophomore Kelley Guerra (Randolph, N.Y.) registered eight kills and also recorded a pair of blocks. Sophomore Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) had eight kills and seven digs. Sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenville, Illi.) recorded 27 helpers along with seven digs and senior Jessica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif.) registered 15 digs with three service aces.

EMERSON 3, Skidmore 2

Neither team hit particularly well in the opening frame, but it was Emerson that grabbed the 25-21 victory. Emerson grabbed the 7-2 lead that consisted of three attack errors committed by Skidmore and three kills by Cohen, Guerra and Hall. The Thoroughbreds grabbed the 18-15 lead before Emerson went on 6-0 run that included three more kills from Cohen to take 21-18 lead. Skidmore came within one, but kills from Cohen and senior Jules Augustine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) sealed the first set win.

Skidmore took set two by the score of 25-20 where they hit .314. An early 11-2 lead propelled the Thoroughbreds for they never sacrificed the lead to the Lions. Emerson threatened and came within three on several occasions, but Skidmore held on to take the victory.

The Lions bounced back from its second set loss to hit .355 in the third and took the 25-16 third frame triumph. Down 5-2 in the early portions of the third, Emerson clawed its way back to regain the 7-5 lead before Skidmore tied the set at 8-8. Skidmore, however, never got the lead back. A late 6-0 run in the third set allowed the Lions to give themselves an 11 point cushion and settled with the 25-16 win.

Emerson could not carry the third set momentum into the fourth, hitting -.043 and got them the 25-14 loss instead. The Lions gave up an early lead on three kills and two aces by the Thoroughbreds. Emerson bounced back and tied the set at 7-7, but Skidmore quickly regained the lead and forced a fifth set.

The fifth and final set saw six lead changes between the two teams even though each team struggled offensively. Despite hitting .053 in the fifth frame, Cohen set up Brennan for a kill that sealed the 15-8 fifth set win for the Lions and came away with the 3-2 match victory.

Cohen recorded 14 kills and three blocks, while Augustine registered 10 kills on 28 swings and two blocks. Edwards registered 19 digs with Brennan recording 34 helpers, two kills and five service aces and Hall blocking nine shots.

Emerson returns to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 6 as they take on Newbury to open its home schedule at 5:00 p.m.
