Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Colin O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn.) and sophomore Alex DeSaulnier (Wilbraham, Mass.) each scored a pair of first half goals to power Emmanuel College past the Emerson men's soccer team in a non-conference 4-0 shutout victory at Clemente Field on Saturday afternoon.
Emmanuel improves to 1-1, while Emerson falls to 0-1.
The Saints got on the board first with O'Donnell's first goal of the half. After the ball deflected off an Emerson defender, senior Jeff Allen (South Windsor, Conn.) sent a through ball off to the right side and made its way to O'Donnell. O'Donnell set himself up and buried the ball into the far post to give Emmanuel the 1-0 lead nearly 11 minutes into the game (10:37).
DeSauliner's first goal of the season lifted Emmanuel to a 2-0 lead over Emerson less than minute after O'Donnell put the Saints on the board (11:21). O'Donnell carried the ball up the left side and into Emerson territory and was quickly doubled up, which left DeSauliner wide open. With DeSauliner open, O'Donnell set him up with a drop pass that DeSauliner buried into the upper right side of the net.
O'Donnell continued to be a problem for Emerson as he tallied his second goal of the half (32:47) that gave Emmanuel a 3-0 cushion. Junior Cameron Messier (Belchertown, Mass.) snatched up the ball just outside of Emerson's back line, which gave O'Donnell a small area to work with. O'Donnell made the better of the small space and snuck his third goal of the season in the near post.
With 2:23 remaining in the first half, DeSauliner netted his second goal of the half to put the lead in Emmanuel's favor at 4-0. The Lions left DeSauliner open on the right side, which allowed freshman Anthony Tzorzis (Topsfield, Mass.) to cross a pass that resulted in the fourth Saints' goal.
Through the first 45 minutes, Emerson held the 7-5 shot advantage over Emmanuel and also the 2-0 edge in corner kicks. Within the second half, Emerson continued to hold the shot advantage (10-3) over Emmanuel, but it was not enough as the Saints came away with the 4-0 triumph.
Senior Samir Beria (Sterling, Va.), junior Marco Correla (Tarrafal, Cape Verde) and senior Duncan Bochicchino (Los Angeles, Calif.) paced the Purple & Yellow with three shot attempts each. Junior Lucas Fischer (Atlanta, Ga.) saved two shots through 90 minutes between the pipes.
Freshman Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) earned the win for the Saints and made six saves through 78 minutes in the net before he was relieved by senior Joe Russo (Malden, Mass.).
Emerson returns to the field on Sunday afternoon for a road tilt against Curry at 1:00. The Saints return to action on Thursday, Sept. 8 as they host Wheelock at 7:00 p.m.
