Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -Sophomore Jess Frost (Pales Verdes, Calif.) and junior Alexandra Levin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) netted two goals less than three minutes apart in the later minutes of the second half to help lift the Emerson women's soccer team to a 2-1 triumph over Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Emerson moves to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC play, while Mount Holyoke slips down to 4-4 overall and 0-2 against NEWMAC opponents.
At the end of a scoreless opening frame, Emerson was edged out by Mount Holyoke 3-2 in the shots category, but got the offense rolling and the Lions found themselves ahead 1-0 after the 67th minute of the second half.
Frost created Emerson's first scoring opportunity when she sent the ball towards teammate Paige Haley (San Diego, Calif.) who was open on the right side. Haley then kicked the ball towards the top middle of the box with Lyons senior goalie Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) stepping away from the goal to cover the ball. That was a mistake on Marshall's part for Levin swooped in and deposited the ball into an empty net (66:36).
Emerson put themselves up two goals to none in the 70th minute on a goal from Frost. Frost fended off two Mount Holyoke defenders, one on the left side of the box and the other in the middle, before she fired her shot through the Lyons defense. Due to Marshall being caught off guard, the ball landed into the left corner of the net with the Lions now up 2-0 (69:31).
Host Mount Holyoke joined in on the scoring mix in the 88th minute on a goal by freshman Hannah Finn-Erb (Northhampton, Mass.). Assisted by classmate Cora Melcher (Portland, Maine), Melcher made her way down the right side with the ball and sent a shot towards the middle that went high. Finn-Erb beat off a Lions defender and buried a shot high from the right side past the reach senior goalie Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn.). Mount Holyoke's 88th minute goal was all the Lyons could register as Emerson notched the 2-1 win.
Escobar earned the win for the Lions and stopped four shots between the pipes through 90 minutes. Marshall was tagged with the loss for the Lyons and saved six shots.
Emerson returns to Rotch Field to kick off a three-game home stand that begins Wednesday against Pine Manor at 6:00 p.m., while Mount Holyoke wraps up its home stand on Tuesday when they host Bay Path at 6:00 p.m.
