Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Two goals from the foot of senior Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) helped lift the Springfield Pride over the Emerson men's soccer team in a 5-0 NEWMAC shutout victory at Brock-Affleck Field on Saturday afternoon.
Emerson falls to 2-5 and 0-2 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield remains undefeated at 6-0-1 and 1-0-1 against conference opponents.
Springfield did not even allow Emerson to take a shot before the Pride gained the 1-0 advantage. With help from sophomore Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.), Alvaro buried his team-leading seventh goal of the season into the net nine minutes into regulation (8:14). Through the remaining minutes of the half, Springfield tallied two more goals to take the 3-0 edge.
After the Lions managed to tally three shots through the next seven minutes, the Pride tacked on its second goal. Assisted by junior Christian Steidle (Owego, N.Y.), senior Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.) put the Pride up 2-0 (31:15). With five minutes left on the clock, Springfield registered their third goal in an eight minute span thanks to a penalty kick net from junior Tim Wood (Derry, N.H.).
At the end of the first half, Emerson found themselves needing to climb back from a three-goal hole and were outshot, 17-4.
Not much else went right for Emerson in the second half for Springfield tacked on two more goals. Alvaro tacked on the fourth Pride goal just two minutes after the start of the second frame (47:00) that was assisted by junior Daniel Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.). A little over a minute later with the assistance of Murphy, Schneider tacked on the fifth and final Springfield goal (48:16) and sealed the 5-0 shutout victory for the Pride.
Senior goalie Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) earned the win for Springfield and saved two shots through 90 minutes between the pipes. Alvaro paced the Pride with two goals and seven shots.
Junior goalie Lucas Fischer (Atlanta, Ga.) was tagged with the loss and saved seven shots. Senior Duncan Bochicchio (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied seven shots for the Lions.
The Lions head to Regis (Mass.) on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. matchup, while the Pride remain at home on Sunday to play host to Keene State at 12:30 p.m.
