Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Overtime Loss to MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Three minutes into overtime, junior Gregory Hui (Palo Alto, Calif.) became the hero for MIT and lifted the Engineers to a 1-0 NEWMAC victory over the Emerson men's soccer team on Saturday night at Steinbrenner Stadium.

With the win, MIT moves to 4-1 overall (1-0 NEWMAC) while Emerson falls to 2-4 (0-1 NEWMAC).

Right out the gate, the Engineers came out strong and ready to go. MIT managed to keep the ball within their offensive zone for a majority of the first half and kept Emerson junior goalie Lucas Fischer (Atlanta, Ga.) busy. Emerson was held to zero shots within the first half due to tough man-to-man defense from MIT. At the end of the first 45 minutes, neither team was able to find the back of the net with the score at 0-0.

It wasn't until the 54th minute of the second half that Emerson managed to give themselves a scoring opportunity. Sophomore Paul Bou Aziz (Nice, France) gained possession of the ball, but was unable to capitalize and sent it wide. Through the remainder of the second half, Bou Aziz's shot was the lone shot for the Lions for the Engineers continued to display a strong defensive effort. 11 shots later for the Engineers and final 45 minutes of regulation in the books, the score remained 0-0 and the game entered overtime.

Three minutes into overtime, Woo led the Engineers to victory. Sophomore David Wu (Naperville, Ill.) first passed the ball off to senior Matthew De La Ossa (New York, N.Y.), Hui collected his through pass and made his way through the box to tally the empty-net game winning goal as MIT came away with the 1-0 overtime win (93:00).

Fischer took the loss for the Lions (2-3) and saved eight shots through 93 minutes between the pipes as Bou Aziz took the lone shot for the Lions.

Freshman Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass.) (1-0) earned the win for the Engineers. Hui paced the Engineers with one goal. Senior Kareem Itani (Dallas, Texas) led MIT with seven shots.

Both Emerson and MIT return to the field on Wednesday night. The Lions will head to Homdel Stadium in Medford, Ma. for a road contest against Newbury at 7:00 p.m. The Engineers continue its home schedule and take on Wentworth at 7:00 p.m.
