BOSTON, Mass. (September 12, 2026) – Widener College scored a goal in each half to deal Emerson College a 2-0 setback in its home opener in a non-conference men's soccer matchup at Rotch Field this afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper Tristan Willey recorded a shutout with three saves and had a hand in the only goal the Pride would need, assisting on a first half marker from classmate Jordi Lopez. Senior Gage Meckley provided the insurance with a second half marker for Widener.
Sophomore Asa Roberts made his second start of the season in goal for Emerson and finished with a season-high six saves.
Willey set up Widener's opening goal in the 23rd minute, spotting Lopez with a boot from inside the Pride's 18 deep into Emerson territory and Lopez fired a low strike into the left side of the goal for his second goal of the season. For Willey, it was the Pride goalkeeper's first career assist.
Widener added an insurance marker a half hour into the second half when Meckley followed up his own rebound after Roberts stopped his initial strike with a shot into the left side for his first goal of the season.
Emerson (3-2-0, 0-0-0 NEWMAC) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts Wittenberg University for a non-conference clash at Rotch Field at 11 a.m. Widener (3-1-1, 0-0-0 MAC) hosts Goucher College next Saturday at 4 p.m.
