Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second consecutive season, the Emerson men's soccer team came out victorious against Lesley in the Charles River Cup. A 69th minute goal from sophomore Tyler Yassky (Nyack, N.Y.) lifted the Lions to a 1-0 victory over the Lynx at Edward Field on Thursday night.
With the win, the Lions move to an even .500 at 2-2, while Lesley falls to 1-4.
Both Emerson and Lesley took their fair share of shots at getting on the board first and it was Emerson who nearly struck first. After senior Duncan Bochicchio (Los Angeles, Calif.) entered the game near the midway point of the first half, he sent up a header that hit the crossbar, but the ball bounced out and the score remained 0-0. A shot from freshman Tiago Pacheo (Cranston, R.I.) at the 37:43 mark made its way into the hands of junior goalie Lucas Fischer (Atlanta, Ga.) before two more shots from Emerson closed out a scoreless opening half.
At the end of one half, the Lions held the 6-4 shot advantage over the Lynx.
Lesley sent three shots Fischer's way before Emerson was able to break the scoreless game in the 69th minute. After the Lynx committed a foul that allowed the Lions to gain possession of the ball, Yassky buried his first goal of the year from inside the left post 18 yards away and past Lesley junior goalie James Webb (San Francisco, Calif.) to put Emerson on top 1-0 (69:41). The Lynx started to become desperate to even the game up as the clock dwindled, but their last shot attempt was quickly stopped by Fischer and sealed the Lions' 1-0 victory at the Charles River Cup for the second straight season.
Fischer earned the win and improved to 2-2 and saved four shots through 90 minutes between the pipes. Yassky led the Lions with one goal and three shots. Webb took the loss for the Lynx (1-4) and had one save. Junior Anthony Vitta (Oceanside, N.Y.) led Lesley with three shots.
Both Emerson and Lesley return to the field on Saturday. Lesley remains at home to host Daniel Webster at 7:00 p.m., while Emerson travels to MIT for a road tilt slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
