Babson Outlasts Women's Lacrosse

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Emily Bresnahan (Wenham, Mass.) scored twice, including the go-ahead goal on a free position shot with 4:01 left in regulation, as Babson College edged visiting Emerson College, 11-10, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at MacDowell Field.

With its fifth win in the last six games, Babson is now 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Emerson falls to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Charlotte O'Halloran (Middletown, R.I.) each finished with two goals and one assist, while classmate Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored twice and led all players with six draw controls for the Beavers. Junior Kiley Fischer (Marblehead, Mass.) added a pair of goals and sophomore Annie Arthur (West Windsor, Vt.) contributed a game-high four ground balls in the win.

Junior Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) finished with five goals, one assist, five draw controls and a game-high three caused turnovers to lead the Lions.

Babson wasted little time taking control of the game, building a 6-0 lead just 8:12 into the contest. Farina scored twice and fellow senior McKenzie Tucci (Winchester, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist during the run for the Beavers. Weber and senior Guerin Morissette (Georgetown, Maine) tallied back-to-back goals to get Emerson within 6-2 at the 14:23 mark, but the Green and White scored twice over the final 12 minutes to build an 8-3 lead at the half.

Fischer converted a feed from O'Halloran 33 seconds into the second half as the Green and White matched its biggest lead of the game. The Lions responded with a six-goal run, including two by Weber, and pulled even at 9-9 on a free-position strike by Morissette with 16:11 to go in the game.

The Beavers went back in front 10-9 on a goal by O'Halloran with 14:29 left and got two huge saves from junior goalkeeper Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) over the next four minutes to maintain the lead. Following turnovers by both teams, Emerson tied the game at 10 on Weber's free-position tally with 6:00 remaining.

The Lions won the ensuing draw control, but junior Delaney Carroll (Acton, Mass.) forced a turnover, and Babson was successful on the clear to set up Bresnahan's game-winning goal. The Green and White ran off nearly three minutes before Weber forced a turnover to give Emerson the ball back with 59 seconds left. Following a frantic exchange of turnovers in the midfield, Lions senior Maggie Sheetz (Topsfield, Mass.) saw her desperation attempt to tie the game sail high in the closing seconds.

Burger finished with six saves for Babson, while sophomore Kristina Modica (East Moriches, N.Y.) stopped eight shots for the Emerson.

The Beavers finished with a slim edge in shots (23-20) and ground balls (14-12) to go along with a 15-8 advantage in draw controls. The Green and White also went 11-of-12 on clears and was 3-for-4 on free-position shots.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Wheaton at 2 p.m., while Emerson takes on Coast Guard on Friday at 7 p.m.
