BOSTON, Mass. - It was a gorgeous day at Rotch Field as the the Lions of Emerson College faced the Lyons of Wheaton College in NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse action. Back and forth scoring culminated in a one goal win for Emerson, as they defeated Wheaton 11-10.
Emerson improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the NEWMAC, while Wheaton falls 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Just over a minute into the first half, Emerson's Tara Windsor scored on a pass from midfielder Tayllar Righini to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. 47 seconds later on a free position shot, Wheaton attack Brooke Sabol tied it up at 1-1 with her first of three goals on the night. Emerson took back the lead with midfielder Meredith Weber scoring her 30th of the season, on an assist from fellow Kate Lemire making it 2-1 Lions.
Following the Weber tally, Lions freshman Emily Quinn scored her first of four on the night to make it 3-1. Sabol followed up with her second on the night to cut the Emerson lead within one. Then, after the Sabol goal, Quinn found the back of the net again, on Righini's second assist of the game, to make it 4-2 Emerson.
Wheaton scored three goals in quick succession to take a 5-4 lead, which included scores from Jenna Tewksbury, Allie Bush, and Madison Cohen. With 9:16 left in the first half, Righini scored her first of the night, assisted by Guerin Morissette After plenty of changes in possession, Emerson and Wheaton went into the second half tied at five.
The Lions opened up the second half by taking the lead with Quinn scoring her third of the game, assisted by Kate Lemire, making it 6-5.
Just over four minutes later Wheaton tied up the game with a goal from midfielder Katie Peters. Once again, Emerson took the lead on a free position shot from defender Maggie Sheetz, 7-6.
Just over a minute later, Quinn recorded goal number four on the game to give Emerson an 8-6 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining. But, for the second time in the game, Wheaton overcomes a two goal deficit to take a one goal lead, with goals from Tewksbury, Sabol, and Peters, all having multi-goal games, as Wheaton lead 9-8 halfway through the second half.
Then, in a 35 second span, Weber and Windsor recorded their second goals of the game giving Emerson a 10-9 lead. However, Bush tied up the game for Wheaton with less than five minutes remaining, once again making it anyone's game.
With 3:00 to go, Emerson senior Morissette streaked across the field to score the 11th goal of the game to win it for the Lions. In a competitive NEWMAC game, the Emerson Lions win their fourth in five games with only four games remaining in the regular season.
In cage for the Lions was Kristina Modica with 10 saves on 20 shots. Defending the net for Wheaton was Molly Witten who made eight saves on 19 shots. Both goalies played the full 60 minutes.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, April 16th, when they face the Simmons College Sharks for an 11:00am game.
Wheaton looks forward to the 16th as well when they host Springfield for a 1:00pm meeting
