Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - With 13 seconds left on the clock, freshman Evan Jurkowski (Ludlow, Mass.) buried the game-winning goal for Clark into the bottom lefthand corner past a diving junior keeper Connor Dane (Quincy, Mass.) as the Cougars defeated the Emerson men's soccer team 1-0 in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
Before the start of today's matchup, Emerson honored the teams seven seniors, including Manuel Lombardi (Miami, Fla.), Samir Beria (Sterling, Va.), Elias Romanos (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), Duncan Bochicchio (Los Angeles, Calif.), Tom Higgins (Lafayette Hills, Penn.), Austin Alphonse (Durham, N.H.) and Skylar Ripley (Yuba City, Calif.), for their hard work and dedication to the program throughout their college careers.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 4-10 overall and 1-5 through NEWMAC competition, while the Cougars move to 13-3 overall and 4-2 against NEWMAC teams.
Emerson junior keeper Connor Dane (Quincy, Mass.) shouldered the loss for the Lions with four saves through 90 minutes in the net, while Clark junior goalie Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) made two stops in the win. Clark outshot Emerson, 14-9.
Bochicchio led the Lions with seven shots, while Jurkowski notched a goal with freshman Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, Md.) sending three shots towards Dane.
The first half remained scoreless, but the opportunities for each team were spread evenly throughout the half. Bochicchio had several of his shot attempts go just wide of the net, while Alphonse broke away in the 27th minute only to have his shot quickly batted away by Maguire in front of the net to hold the 0-0 tie. Emerson outshot Clark 6-4 through the first 45 minutes of play.
Much like the first half, both teams narrowly missed chances to break the 0-0 tie. Clark had several shots bounce off the crossbar, while Emerson had its three shots towards the goal all stopped by Maguire. As the clock quickly wound down to the final 10 seconds of the second half, Jurkowski broke the tie with 13 seconds left. Off a throw in, Jurkowski collected the ball on the right side of the box, fired it past the dive of Dane and found its way into the lower left corner of the net to seal the 1-0 victory for the Cougars.
Emerson and Clark return to the field on Wednesday. The Lions head to Hormel Stadium in Medford, Mass. to face Fischer in its last non-conference matchup of 2016 at 7:00 p.m., while the Cougars return home to host Framingham State at 7:00 p.m.
