Women's Lacrosse Falls to Wheaton, 18-6

NORTON, Mass. – Junior attack Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) scored a career-high seven goals, including her 100th career strike at the 19:50 mark of the first half, to lead the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory over Emerson College in league play on Wednesday evening at Nordin Field.
 
Classmate Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) added four goals, one assist, a career-high nine draw controls and one caused turnover to the win. JuniorAllie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) added one goal and a game-high four assists, while seniors Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and junior Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) all chipped in with one goal apiece.
 
Emerson received two goals each from sophomore Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), junior Tayllar Righini (Salem, N.H./Salem) and classmate Guerin Morissette (Georgetown, Maine/Morse). Weber also added one assist and a draw control to her stat line, while junior Kate Lemire (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) dished out a team-high two assists.
 
Wheaton went 17-for-19 on its clear attempts, outshot the visitors 37-17, won the draw controls matchup 19-6 and scooped up a team-high 27 ground balls. Emerson had 20 ground balls and completed 14 of its 23 clear attempts.
 
Sabol scored six goals over a span of 16:17 including her 100th career goal on a one-time off a feed from Bush at the 19:50 mark to push the Lyons ahead by a 6-1 margin. Weber potted her 30th goal of the season at 24:58 to break up back-to-back tallies by Sabol.
 
After Sabol responded to Weber's strike with four-straight goals, Jenquine buried a pass from Bush at 13:13 to bump the advantage to 7-1. Weber countered with her second goal of the game at 9:14, but Wheaton closed out the half on a 3-0 run, which included two markers by Jenquine and one from Cohen, to march into the break with a 10-2 advantage.
 
Wheaton doubled up Emerson, 8-4, in the second half as Tewksbury matched the Lions offensive output with four goals of her own to seal the victory.
 
Senior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) stopped six shots to improve to 9-3 on the season in net for the Blue and White. Emerson junior goalkeeper Victoria Kanaris (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) made 11 saves in the loss. Kanaris has now recorded ten or more saves in six out ten games played this season.
 
With today's win, Wheaton College women's lacrosse head coach Emily Kiablick has tied John P. Hill for the most coaching victories in program history with 66 toal. Sabol also is on pace to crack the top-10 goals list as she needs 12 total to surpass Sarah Whitehead '89 who is currently positioned tenth with 111 markers. Sabol currently has 39 goals total in 2015. Sabol's career-high for goals was set last year at 52 in 21 games played.
 
Wheaton (9-4, 5-0 NEWMAC) will travel to Springfield College on Saturday, April 11 to take on the Pride at 1 p.m. Both teams are currently undefeated in league play this season. Emerson (6-4, 2-3 NEWMAC) visits Lasell this Saturday for a non-conference tilt at 3:30 p.m.
