BOSTON, MA - The Emerson women's lacrosse team earned a convincing win on Saturday by defeating the Smith College Pioneers, final score 17-2. Emerson started the game in dominating fashion, scoring the first ten goals. the Lions were led by Tayllar Righini, who at one point scored four straight goals. Emerson was also led by six assists from Kate Lemire.
Smith's Julia Hamilton got the visitors on the board before Emerson scored the last four goals going to halftime, 14-1.
The second half was much more of a defensive battle. As turnovers disrupted the offensive rhythm of the game, only four total goals scored the entire half. Smith's second goal was by Caroline Myran, who played an aggressive game for a complete sixty minutes. Leading the Pioneers in ground balls was Rachel Silveria with 4.
Leading the Lions in caused turnovers was Maggie Sheetz, who also had 5 ground balls, putting her in four way tie for first.
Emerson had a particularly strong performance in net, with goaltenders Victoria Kanaris and Kristina Modica combining to make 10 saves on 12 shots to keep Smith's offense at bay. Emerson also was very disciplined in the contest as they had no penalties for the entire game.
With the win, Emerson improves to 5-2, and 1-1 in conference play. With the loss, Smith falls to 3-6 and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Emerson's next game is at home against Babson College on April 1st at 6:00pm.
