WENHAM, Mass.—Emerson Women's Lacrosse knocked Gordon off a two-game win streak, holding the high-scoring Scots to only six scores in a 13-6 non-conference victory at a blustery Brigham Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening. The Lions' Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) scored a game-high four goals, while Rebecca Smith (Verona, N.J.) and Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) each added two goals for Gordon.
Weber kicked off the scoring just three minutes into the first half off a cross from teammate Kate Lemire (Scituate, Mass.). The Emerson sophomore attacker made it 2-0 just a few minutes later, again receiving a pass from behind the net for the score, but this time from senior Marlee Galper (Santa Monica, Calif.). Tayliar Righini (Salem, N.H.) added another in the 10th minute to give the Lions a comfortable 3-0 lead in the early stages.
Gordon didn't strike until halfway through the first period when Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) found the twine—an unassisted attempt for her seventh of the year. The Fighting Scots were able to get good looks for a majority of the night, but solid goalkeeping play by Victoria Kanaris (Haworth, N.J.) made a big difference in the end result.
Emerson's Guerin Morissette (Georgetown, Maine) put the Lions back up by three goals with 10 minutes to play in the first half on the power play. Gordon came right back down the field after the Lions turned over the initial draw control win, as Megan Avery (Rochester, N.H.) scored her first of the season on a feed from Grinnell.
The Lions offense kicked into another gear over the final six minutes of the half, scoring as many times as they had in the first 24 minutes to put themselves up 8-2 at the break. Weber, Righini and Morissette all scored again during the stretch, while Lizzy Hartel (North Brunswick, N.J.) added her first of the game on a free-position attempt.
Emerson grew its lead to nine over the first 10 minutes of the second half to put Gordon on its heels. However, the Fighting Scots responded with some toughness on the offensive end, scoring three of the next four goals to close the gap to seven. Smith scored both of her goals during a four-minute span in the half.
Righini completed a hat-trick at the 49-minute mark before Gordon's Illian got one back with just over six to play, ending the game with its final score of 13-6.
Emerson's Weber and Gordon's Grinnell split draw controls with five wins each. Maggie Sheetz (Topsfield, Mass.) led the Lions with four ground balls, while Kristin Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.) picked up the same amount to pace the Scots.
Kanaris preserved the win by making 13 saves and only allowing six shots past her. Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) made nine saves and dropped to 2-3 between the pipes.
