Box Score BOSTON, Mass - It was Senior Day at Rotch Field, as the Emerson's Women's soccer team earned a valuable 2-1 conference win against Coast Guard in double overtime. With the win the Lions rise to 10-5-1 and 2-5-1 in the NEWMAC. The Bears drop to 6-9 and 2-6 in conference play.
This match excellent goalkeeping from the Emerson's Melanie Escobar and Coast Guard's Rachel Boohar.
Boohar was unable to maintain her clean sheet throughout the first half, losing her hopes of a shutout when Alexandra Dezenzo assisted Jess Frost on her eighth goal of the season in the 42nd minute.
Emerson took seven shots in the first half, with six efforts on target. The Bears took three shots, but only one required saving by Escobar.
The second half featured a staggering 25 shots. Emerson had 16 of those, but only 7 were on frame, and Boohar saved all of them, allowing the Bears to maintain their foothold in the match.
Coast Guard would have six shots on goal, with their best coming 70 minutes in, when Brianna Grisell equalized and punished the Lions for not finding the net with their multitude of shots. Escobar would save five attempts in the second stanza.
After 90 minutes, the score was tied, sending the game into overtime. The next goal, if any, would conclude the match.
The first overtime period identified a weakness in each of the teams. Emerson couldn't find the back of the net, and Coast Guard couldn't even manage a shot. The Lions took five shots, with four of them on goal. Attempts from Rachel Lord, Jess Frost, Tayllar Righini, and Alexandra Dezenzo were all stopped by Boohar. Emerson's accuracy was much better than in regulation, as they were determined to score, but Boohar kept the Bears alive.
Following 10 extra minutes, and no goals, this thriller was destined for double overtime. If neither team scored before the clock had struck the 110-minute mark, the fight would finish in a draw.
Emerson continued to push forward in the final period, and 40 seconds in, Jess Frost elicited another clutch save from Boohar. The Lion's midfield dominated, and again refused to allow another Coast Guard shot.
In the 106th minute, Alexandra Dezenzo weaved through the Bear defense, and struck her twelfth goal of the season, delivering the knockout blow, and sending Coast Guard home empty handed.
Next up the Lions host MIT at Rotch Field on October 27th at 6:00pm. This will be their last home contest, and 2nd to last conference match.
Coast Guard returns to action on Tuesday, October 27th when they take on Wellesley in NEWMAC action. Kickoff is 3:30.
